KAL HO NAA HO [2003]

(Tomorrow May Never Come)

I had heard a lot about this movie but never could finish watching full movie in one go. Today on this Valentine’s Day (Feb 14, 2009) I saw the Valentine’s Day Special movie in full on Sony TV. Shahrukh, Preiti and Saif gave excellent performances; so were the songs and the direction. Worth watching.

“Kal ho na ho” is produced by Yash Johar; directed by Nikhil Advani; written by Karan Johar; music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

Caste: Shah Rukh Khan as Aman Mathur, Preity Zinta as Naina Catherine Kapur, Saif Ali Khan as Rohit and Jaya Bachchan as Jennifer Kapur in the main roles.

''Kal Ho Naa Ho'' (''Tomorrow May Never Come'') is a romantic comedy and family melodrama. The central figure and narrator is Naina (Preity Zinta), a young woman who lives in a snug Indian neighborhood somewhere in Manhattan.

Naina, who wears glasses and who is studying for a business degree at the University of New York, might seem an ideal daughter, but she is a disappointment to her large Punjabi family for the standard reason: she is not married and has no immediate intention to be.

Though Naina is involved in a teasing flirtation with a fellow student, the wealthy Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), she has closed her heart against love, a result of her father's mysterious suicide some years before. But suddenly a shooting star drops into her life in the form of Aman (Shah Rukh Khan), an infectiously optimistic and energetic visitor from India. Aman moves into Naina’s small Indian neighborhood.

He helps solve everyone’s problems and helps them face the challenges of life. Aman makes a sea of change in Naina’s life. He makes her do things that she would never have dreamt of doing. He pesters the pretty Naina into dropping her glasses, while encouraging her to fall in love with the shy but gallant Rohit.

His constant persuasion finally teaches Naina how to smile once again. Aman and his friend Rohit are trying to help Naina find her happiness that has been lost in the wraths of time. The power of friendship makes miraculous changes in the lives of these three. However, a sequence of unfortunate events creates chaos between them.

On seeing the movie I was reminded of Rajesh Khanna’s “Anand” where also the vibrant Rajesh Khanna, who also knew he had only a few months to live, made everyone around him happy before his premature departure.

Kal Ho Naa Ho is not a run-of-the mill film. It puts forth some pertaining question about life too and tries to answer them too. What would you do if your life heads towards a blind end or if you know that your life is going to end on 29 March 2010 (just an example)? What will be your approach to life if you had to fight a fatal illness in your young age? What would be your reaction if your beloved slips out of your hands while you undergo the agony of your deadly ailment?

These are some of the intriguing questions that Aman Mathur faced in his life in the movie. He struggles to find some answer.

Kal Ho Naa Ho has a bunch of emotions that would make you think deeply and leave an enduring impact in you.

Kal Ho Naa Ho asks, “Who knows what tomorrow holds”. It tells you that life is a valuable gift of god. It teaches you to make the most of it. You might have some long-term goals and yet you might be waiting for the ‘right’ opportunity to pursue these goals. Kal Ho Naa Ho tells you to start pursuing them today, for who knows what would happen tomorrow.

Kal Ho Naa Ho tries to grab your attention towards the beauty of the world around you and makes you try to smell the sweet fragrance of flowers; makes you try to hear the soothing sounds of the space. This is life, the ultimate gift. Make the most out of it.

Love…Laugh…Live…

*Who knows what tomorrow has in store?
