After a looong wait of five years, Vidya Balan and Sujoy Ghosh have teamed together to gift us another dark and mysterious kahaani. Kahaani 2 is an entirely different movie from the original Kahaani, but the spices and the elements of the story still remain the same. The same leading lady(or perhaps you can call her the hero), a west Bengal setting and similar atmospherics are some of the similarities which will take you in flashback mode to the original Kahaani.

The backdrop of the story begins in Chandan Nagar where Vidya Sinha(vidya Balan) resides with her daughter Minni ( Tunisha Sharma) .Vidya’s daughter is paralyzed from her waist down and she wants to get her treated at the New york Children’s family. The lower middle background of vidya has her working a job to meet the requirements of the family and to procure money for Minni’s treatment.

Coming home from the office one day Vidya finds out that her daughter is missing. The fear which has been haunting the doting mother in vidya comes to life when she receives a call from the abductors. One call she receives some instructions from the kidnappers. Do I need to tell you what instructions she receives? Yes, you guessed it right the much clichéd kidnapper threat – If you want to see your kid alive we need to do what we say. In this case, she is given instructions to come to a certain place. However, the quest the to locate her daughter lasts only for a few seconds for she is bumped off by a speeding car.

She is rushed to the hospital where she undergoes treatment for “traumatic brain injury”. And then comes the part when sub-inspector Inderjeet Singh(Arjun Rampal) makes an entry in order to investigate the case.

On his visit to vidya’s house, he discovers that she has acquired a fake identity. Her diary also unravels the mystery behind vidya’s life and Arjun empathizes with the trying life that Minnie and she have survived. Amidst all this, vidya has a mysterious visitor who jabs her with a syringe after which her condition worsens even more. On the other hand. Arjun is still trying to solve the case.

But there are bigger questions at stake. Will vidya ever see her daughter again? Will Arjun find out why she faked her identity?

I don’t want my review to be a spoiler and it’s best if those questions remain unanswered

Talking about the performances, it would not be an overstatement to say that vidya Balan is the hero of the film. Arjun’s performance is also commendable and his character is what keeps the entire episode together. The cinematography deserves a round of applause considering the setting in which the movie has been shot.

One of the things that will stay with you after the movie is the song Mehram. It is so damn hummable that it might turn out to be your jam for the next few days.

As far as my take on the climax is concerned, the movie could have definitely been the most thrilling suspense movie of the year had the climax been a little more unconventional and unpredictable
