The Stars
Kabhi Khushie Kabhi Gham was another Bollywood multistarrer as it had some of the top actors and actresses in Bollywood today.
First of all, Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) returned to pair up with her husband Amitabh Bachchan after a gap of 18 years. This was a good sign for the film as their first film together Zanjeer made Amitabh the star that he is today.
Next, Kajol and Shah Rukh who have previously made hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayege were back together on screen.
Finally, the pair Hrithik and Kareena paired up for the emotional film Yaadein… so was a hit coming your way?
Well... lets move on to the story
The Story
When I first saw the trailor on Tv it looked really emotional and interesting. I just had to watch it!
The film starts of with Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) playing cricket in college. He closes his eyes and we hear the familiar voice of Shah Rukh Khan who plays his brother Rahul saying, ‘When you want to achieve or win just close for eyes and think of your parents and then you will go over all the hurdles in life.’ So Rohan wins the cricket match and since it’s his last day in college he go to see his ‘2 girlfriends’, his favourite grandmas.
From a colourful and joyful scene we move onto a dark atmosphere. Both the grans are sitting down and the oldest one is crying. Apparently, she’s Yashovardhan Raichand’s (Amitabh Bachcan) mum. She is extremely missing Rahul. She goes on to reveal that he was Yashovardhan Raichand’s adopted son. Rohan hears this and is shocked.
We move back into the past when we see Yashovardhan Raichand bring home a little boy (Aryan Khan, Shah Rukh Khan’s real son) who is revealed to be Rahul. She goes on to say that when Rahul grew up to be 8 year old he found out he was adopted and Yashovardhan Raichand swore that he was their real son from that day on.
We move on to the grand house. It’s Massive!! It’s Dilwali and Nandini is singing the title song ‘Kabhie Khushie Kabhi Gham’ and then there’s a pause in her singing when a helicopter lands and a man is running with a briefcase in hand. Nandini stops giving the arti and walks to the doorway and looks disappointed when she sees no one and then she looks again and there he is…. Rahul (played by the gorgeous Shah Rukh) He smiles and says, ‘ How come mum, you always know when I’m here.’
Rani Mukherjee plays a special appearance in the film, as she is Rahul’s friend and the girl Yashovardhan Raichand has chosen as Rahul’s wife. Yashovardhan Raichand has always teaches his sons to protect and pass on heritage, morals, values and beliefs.
Unexpectedly, Rahul falls in love with a Punjabi girl Anjali (Kajol). He tells his father and Yash simply refuses, there is no way he is going to let a girl who lives in poverty marry into his billionaire family. When Yash tells Rahul to end his relationship with Anjali, she simply can’t when he see’s her father is dead. Unable to keep his emotions he fills her hairline with sindoor and makes her his wife.
When he returns home, Yash is extremely upset and reminds Rahul that he is his adopted son and that he was a fool to believe that Rahul would follow his family traditions. This scene is greatly emotional as we see Nandini cry and give her daughter in law her bangles. The sadder version of the title song plays adding more melancholy.
Rahul then visits his brother Rohan, in a boarding school who is over weight (not played by Hrithik yet). They sit on a wooden bench and Rahul tells him that he is leaving home and that Rohan should never ask his parents why he has gone, should get selected for the school cricket team and definitely lose some weight.
The movie moves back into the present as Rohan returns to his gigantic home, and talks to his mum. He swears that he will bring back his brother. When Rohan finds out that Rahul lives in London he sets off on a mission to bring back his brother.
Pooja, the younger sister of Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) adds some spice and modern touch to the film with her comic scenes as she plays ‘Pooh’. She falls in love with Rohan and invites him into her house. There he meets Rahul but hides the fact that he is Rohan and pretends to be Pooja’s friend’s cousin. There are comedy scenes as Rahul tries to cover Pooja’s body when she is wearing clothes revealing her body.
But the question is will Rohan succeed in his mission to re-unite his brother with his family? If not what will happen? To find out watch the film as some emotional scenes follow up to the ending.
The Music
The film had great music including hits like You Are My Soniya, Shava Shava and Bole Chudiyan. The songs fit in with the film and are not just placed in out of the blue.
Suraj Hua Maddham had exotic scenery however, it was sad because Kajol suffered a miscarriage when she fell :(
Why watch it?
This film portrays the relationship of parents with their children. It is an emotional film that brings tears to your eyes. There is comedy is places to lighten up the mood. There are absoultly fabulous performances by all the actors and actresses especially Jaya aunty as she cried naturally.
The saying is true that their is sometimes happiness and sometimes sadness in life.... Overall its a blockbuster!!!
