KAABIL: Dial R For Revenge!

You have seen, INSAF KA TARAZU(1980), AAKHRI RAASTA(1986), MOHRA(1994), BANDIT QUEEN(1994), DUSHMAN(1998), RAAVAN(2010), 7 KHOON MAAF(2011), CHAKRAVYUH(2012), and numerous other Hindi movies dealing with rape and revenge. In KAABIL too, there is rape and revenge but with a slightly newer angle of the lead pair being visually impaired(blind).

And this newer angle adds excitement as to how the hero will go about a seemingly difficult task. And this is what the movie is all about.

KAABIL at times seems to be a ripped-off copy of Korean movie BROKEN(2014), Netflix's DAREDEVIL(2016) or even Salman's shelved BULAND(1994). That doesn't matter for Hrithik packs-in tremendous energy and with as expressive eyes and face as his, the audience stay glued to the screen.

The movie's story stays true to the 70s or 80s Hindi cinema. It does seem unrealistic but then the theme of romance, rape, and revenge keeps you engaged. And the credit goes together to both the hero and the heroine. More so to the hero as he is alive to avenge the suicide of his raped wife.

Yes, it is Dial R for Revenge but soon enough it turns to Dial R for(H)Rithik, for he is the determined avenger. His attitude of do or die is worth applauding.

Rohan Bhatnagar(Hrithik Roshan, 43) is a blind voice artist but his other senses are well developed. He finds love in another blind piano player Supriya(Yami Gautam, 28). And love leads to marriage.

Soon enough, the couple's heaven becomes their hell when the local councillor Madhavrao Shellar(Ronit Roy, 51) younger sibling a local thug Amit Shellar(Rohit Roy, 48) goes ahead and rapes her twice. Amit's buddy Wasim(Sahidur Rahman, 35) joins in.

The couple's idyllic life falls apart. Rohan doesn't get any help from the policemen Chaubey(Narendra Jha, 50) and(Girish Kulkarni, 35). Madhavrao takes care of the policemen. Su cannot bear the shame and injustice and ends her life. Rohan's dark world becomes bleak but there is a ray of light and the revenge keeps him ticking.

Rohan is a man with a mission. The fire burning inside him doesn't let him rest. He goes ahead with a fight to finish with a do or die attitude. The movie after Interval is all about revenge and this is simply terrific. Needless to say, the hero is the victor. How else can the audience root for.

Rohan's endeavour to teach the thugs the lesson is all about cheering him whole-heartedly. Neither was I on my feet, nor my mouth closed. I clapped loudly. I was with all the hero all the way.

The story has nothing new to offer. The songs are remixes and a big no no. They are a hindrance to the story progress. The movie is dark. But Hrithik and Yami infuse such laughter and energy that one just goes with the flow.

There are supporting characters - Zafar(Suresh Menon, 50) and Wasim's father(Akhilendra Mishra, 54).

Next year, I'm sure Hrithik will lift all the awards along with the National film award for the best male actor. And why not. He simply deserves it. Kudos.
