A LOVE LETTER TO THE MUGHALS

Originality:

My first impression after listening

to the Jodha Akbar soundtrack was that of astonishment, followed by delight.

Astonishment because the music, orchestration and the tempo were so different

from what I had in mind, considering the film’s premise. The thought of period

films, particularly those based on the Mughal era transmits one back in time to

the 1950s and 60s when gems like Mughal-E-Azam, Taj Mahal and Jahan Ara created

history with unforgettable music. Well, to tell you the truth I was expecting

something similar, but while the music recreates similar magic it

remains unique and original in its own way. In fact if ever there was an album

which could actually stake claim at blending modern with traditional, Jodha

Akbar it is.

Having established the fact that I liked what the album has to offer, lets look

at what makes it stand out. Well, for starters there are 7 tracks on this album,

however, you can make them 5 because two of them are ingenious instrumental

versions. Personally I feel 5 songs are too few considering that movies on

similar themes in the past have featured many more, and love stories usually provide

enough scope for songs. Nevertheless, that disappointment is largely overcome

by the quality which is simply top notch.

The album opens with the regal,

powerful and mind blowing number Azeemo Shan Shahenshah.  The sound of drums and horns that

greets you here is befitting the aura of the great emperor Akbar. It has an epic, war

march feel to it which is hard to miss. The poetry by Javed Akhtar is top notch and

ensues a feeling of grandeur and awe. However, it is fair to say that the

lyrics and vocals are completely overshadowed by the musical brilliance of

Rahman who uses innovative sounds and instruments to lend a majestic, awe

inspiring touch. A great start for sure.

Next in queue is the heart warming and extremely romantic **Kehne Ko Jashne

Baharan Hain, **soulfully

rendered by Javed Ali who sounds a lot like Sonu Nigam but holds his own in

this classic, dazzling number, penned once again by Javed Akhtar. This is quite

easily the highlight of the album and would probably end as one of the all time

classics. You could hear this love song over and over again. The use of strings

at the beginning recreates the mood of the Mughal/ Arabic melody in all its

glory.

Following this sweet number is a Qawalli- **Khwaja Mere Khwaja Dil Me Sama ja. In the 60s most of the period

films had a Qawalli, Mughal-E-Azam had Teri

Mehfil Me Kismat Aazma Kar and Taj

Mahal featured Sone Ka Badan, Rahman continues

the tradition with this exotic, mesmerizing number, which he also incidentally renders

in his unique, understated voice. Talking of Qawwalis, this one has such a

unique composition that it stands out in its genre. The chorus and use of Tabla

here is beautiful.

In Lamhon Ke Daman Mein

is next in queue and is definitely the other high point of this album with Jashne Baharan, which it partly resembles

in pace, emotion and the orchestration. However, this is Sonu Nigam’s turn to

create magic with his warm vocals creating intense passion and romance. In the

process he once again proves his pedigree as arguably the best playback singer

in Bollywood today.  While some may take

longer to warm up to this number, its quality and brilliance is unquestionable.

The use of chorus and  strings is

outstanding and the poetry by Javed Akhtar is simply superb. The song has a

surreal dreamy feel and would linger on for a long time.

The Final Track of the album Man Mohanais sung by Bela Shende. This is a soft,

romantic number which is situational and therefore doesn’t leave as lasting an

impact as the others. However, the instrumentation here is still top class with

several instruments blending harmoniously.

Finally, there are two Instrumental tracks on this album. These are Kahne

Ko Jashne Baharan and Khwaja Mere Khwaja. Both are beautifully performed and

provide the listeners an opportunity to soak in the complex musical

compositions.   Both the tracks are

unique and eventually melody to the ears.

So, all said, the music of Jodha Akbar is set to become a classic. The

music has originality and a timeless quality that would make it popular for

years to come. It is a reflection of Rahman’s Musical genius and Javed Akhtar’s

lyrical perfection. The blend of the two is intoxicating and simply magical.

This album is a must for every music lover.
