Yashraj Films are a big production house. Concentrate on the use of words there.they are a BIG PRODUCTION HOUSE. Nothing more than that. In the past they have been great movie makers, but right now with directors like Sanjay Gadhvi and Shaad Ali Sehgal making movies for the camp, it is quickly turning into a production house that invests big time on the stars, makes a plain ordinary movie, and expects the star power to return more than their investment.
While this business philosophy never came under criticism thanks to the great image of Yashraj Films, in the recent times they have been noted for investing in directors who possess cash and technique in abundance, but have no script or screenplay to deliver to their audiences. BUNTY AUR BABLI was a plain average product working due to the magic of the Bachchans. MERE YAAR KI SHAADI HAI was quite disappointing, especially towards the end. DHOOM 2 was the biggest disappointment of them all. Of course some critics thought otherwise and gave that rank to Shaad's JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM(JBJ) as soon as the movie released. But with DHOOM 2 being the letdown of the season at the time of its release, JBJ at least saves itself from becoming that bad.
Sure the minusses of the movie are there in abundance. For instance there is no script. There is also no screenplay. The great city of London has not been done justice to by the camera man either. The editing team, to add to the problems, go one step further and stretch a lot of the sequences to unwanted lengths. But then again, with the movie bashed left and right, the expectations right from the first day were quite low.
The positives, while lesser than the negatives, manage to entertain at least partly. These include Shankar-Ehsan-Loy's two good tracks(title song, Bol Na Halke Halke), great choreography and presentation, as well as very entertaining performances from the entire lead cast.
Abhishek Bachchan as Riki Thukral is excellent. While the media has been busy talking about his personal life(marriage) more than his professional life, the actor gives them enough reasons to come back and watch him do what he does best: perform. In the comic sequences he is hilarious, while in the emotional ones he is a complete natural. Also, he has lived up to his reputation of a rapidly improving dancer quite successfully.
Preity Zinta is good as well. While her acting is not very different from the usual, she looks very good and credit goes to the make-up artists who have presented her so well. It is true that Preity is pretty, but it takes good designers to get a great look out of the stars. Bobby Deol as Steve is a great surprise. The movie starts with him in a typical rich tycoon's role, though as the movie progresses he gets the chance to play a lawyer, a lover, and a quite hilarious guy as well. Bobby takes full advantage of the opportunity and performs very well. Lara Dutta looks EXTREMELY GORGEOUS. To be honest, I thought Lara has already been at her best in movies like MASTI and NO ENTRY but here she not only looks extremely gorgeous, but manages to speak really sexy French while playing her double role with extreme ease and efficiency. A great performance for sure! The supporting cast is alright as well.
On the whole, JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM is no great shakes and has not created any Dhoom at all. But it is definitely not that bad a movie considering that a director of low capability(Shaad) is the one directing it. That clearly means Shaad needs to grow up as a director and stop taking advantage of the banner and stars given to him. It is about time he tries proving himself by working with newer actors and a new, good script as well. Overall, the movie is recommended, as it is an average time pass with its pros, though the cons need repair!
