Vidhyasagar's first step to Bollywood

Originality:

After many unsuccessful south Indian composers who couldn?t prove themselves in Bollywood no matter how good they may be in south India, here is another successful music director down south called Vidhyasagar making his first step into the vast arena of Hindi film music through the album of the movie ?Hul Chul? directed by Priyadarshan. Very few of the south Indian music composers like A.R.Rahman and M.M. Kreem have been recognized well in bollywood.

There has always been a hesitation in the north while accepting a talent from down south. This is not my opinion. Singers like Chitra, SPB themselves have said this in interviews. Even Harris Jayaraj had a fantastic debut through ?Rehna hey Tere dil mein? which had great melodies but what is the result he wasn?t given any new offers. A south Indian has to perform twice more than what a north Indian has to do to prove himself there. Will Vidhyasagar stay in bollywood? Does the album have sufficient potential to keep up his name in Bollywood? Read on?..

The album has totally 6 tracks and the lyrics are written by Sameer.

Rafta Rafta

Udit Narayanan, Sujatha

In this song he has used his own tune of ?Aasai Aasai? song from Tamil movie ?Dhool?. The song was a hit in Tamilnadu. It is a nice melody with good beats. Though he has reused the tune, the song and the orchestration sounds different from the original as it proceeds and that is to make it suitable for north Indians. Sujatha a very popular singer down south who has sung very few songs before in Hindi under ARR?s composition comes back promisingly with mellifluous rendition of this song along with Udit at his usual best in singing. The violin orchestrations in the prelude and the interludes are good and ?Na na na? bit adds beauty to the song.

Hum Dil Ke

Shaan, Sadhana Sargam

In this song he has again used his own tune of ?Pani Katrae? song from Tamil movie ?Run? but this song wasn?t featured in that movie. It is a great melody again. The flute piece which starts the song is soothing and sets the right mood for the song. Sadhana Sargam in a melody needs no mention, does her best. Shaan is okay. The rhythm and the subtle beats in this melody will be fresh to Hindi music. To enhance the Hindi feel in the song, he has used strings mostly used in Hindi songs in the interludes. Though it is good, I don?t know how well the song will be received in bollywood.

Lut Gayee

Gayatri, Sayanora Philip, Poornima, Raja Lakshmi

This foot tapping folk number with four female singers is highly situational. The song transcends to different moods as it proceeds. Again the flute usage and orchestrations in the interludes are good. I couldn?t trace out who is singing what. Overall the song has a decent stuff that may gel well with the visual.

Ishq Main

Shaan and Alka Yagnik

The song starts promisingly like a melody with pulling beats. The flute piece in the first interlude is very different and good. You can hear different Alka Yagnik in this song. He carefully came out of mixing right elements in all the above songs so that it may not sound like a Tamil song but in this song he fails miserably. Though it has a promising start it slips off in the middle.

Lee Humne

Hariharan

The best song of the album comes with the voice of Hariharan who hardly sings these days. The prelude with guitar and flute pieces kindles our expectation further. Fortunately, the song doesn?t disappoint like the previous one. Flute pieces aptly used in synch with voice at right places adds beauty to the song. Hariharan with his soothing voice elevates the song by putting right subtle octaves at right places.

Dekho Zara Dekho

Udit Narayanan, Kunal Kanjwala

This is again an average fun song. But he master of interludes does it again in the interludes of this song with some nice piece of violin orchestrations. Both the singers have done their job well.

Vidhyasagar has crossed half the well successfully, but this effort will not do for Vidhyasagar what Rangeela did for A.R.Rahman in Hindi film music but nonetheless a good effort. A music lover without any biases will definitely love 4 out of 6 songs in this album.
