This is my first review which I have been planning since 2008 when I have purchased unicorn. I have read so many reviews on Mouthshut about Bikes which helped in Purchasing my Bike. Anyways better late than Never.
Requirement:-
City use, Sometime Long Drives on weekend, Comfortable Riding posture, Good Mileage, Lower Maintenance cost. My Height 5.7 and weight 65KG
My office was 25Km from my place so I need to travel 50km daily. So I need a bike who doesn't adds much fatigue after office hours and should be economical too.
Date of Delivery – 26th Nov 2008
Onroad Price – 67, 300 Rs (Bangalore) with accessories it was close to 70K
Colour - Black
Let directly come to review after 40000KM of Drive (4 years) :-
PROS
1). Riding Posture - Its awesome, I drove 360 KM (Bangalore to Chidambaram) in 10 hours. I Took shortcut to save 30-40 km which was not a good decision, However I was not that much tired after reaching Chidambaram. No Back pains and any Wrist pain.
Even in Bangalore I use to drive close to 40km daily and I have never got any complains on posture.
2). Mileage: - In the first year of Bike Purchase I use to get 60+ in Bangalore city traffic.
In Subsequent years it got reduced to 50 in Bangalore city traffic and if you drive rash or (80/100 KMph) Mileage gets reduced to 45.
However on Highways currently I am getting 53
3). Tyres - MRF zapper tyres which is supplied with bike is pretty good. 40K And it looks that still I can drive 10K further with same tyre. However I need to drive
a bit more carefully now since tires are old and can skid when sudden brakes are applied at high speed. However it was not the case when tires were new.
So if you drive in range of 40 to 50 kmph then you can use same tires upto 50K. But for better results it is always advisable to change tyres after 20K
4). Acceleration :- , head to head acceleration comparison with Pulsar 150 and Apache 160 of Flat surface are ahead of Unicorn.
But It is powerful while climbing Flyovers and acceleration is above par when compared with P150 and Apache
5). Body Design – Very robust and heavy. I have met will with many accidents 3-4 minors and 2-3 Major and every time bike is in condition where it can be started and is in driving condition. (Accidents occurrence has nothing to do with bike however it depends on the riders driving style). So point here is after having number of accidents I need not to change any Major Parts which is mainly because of Leg Guard. Yes there are scratches near headlamp and Silencer but not any scratch or dents on Petro tank. So I suggest everybody to get equipped with leg guard which is part of additional accessories.
6). Side Indicator: – Are sleek and Flexible and Strong. Since I met with accidents many time but I have changed only side indicator twice. Which I feel in other bike it could have been 5-6 times.
7). Pillion Comfort: – Its pretty good, Thanks to Mono Suspension and its three level of adjustment.
8). Battery: – Is also very good. Now after four years of Service it has died and I need it get replaced, in between I have recharged it once after replacing water inside it . As compared to other bike whose battery lasts only for 2 Years. (Initially, Most of the time My first start of day begins with Kick start)
9). Engine: – The best part is its Sound. You hardly hear it when your engine is on and you are standing at Traffic signal. It happened many time that my friends use to wait to ride until bike is started, I use to reply “its already started just hop in”. When you drive at 40-50kmph and you have any other vehicle passing by you will hear others engine sound. It has got best smooth sound in its class. Acceleration becomes more responsive when you have got heavier person (100kg or so) at back
10). Brakes: - Brakes are good, Front disk brakes are responsive. But it not the best. Just a word of caution please don’t apply Front disk brake very hard at turnings
11). Rear View Mirror: – Are good and adjustable and provides good coverage of everything coming from back side. Again its strongly built as I have to replace by rear view mirror only twice.
12). Logo: - I love the Logo of Honda wings on the Petrol Tank, It is one the major components of making it stylish design.
13). Low Maintenance: - Its Parts and electrical units are well built and Last longer so Maintenance cost very Low
14). Kick Start: – Wonderful only One Kick is required on daily usage, And Multiple Kick if you bike is in idle condition for 1-2 weeks
CONS:-
1). Head lamp – Head lamp should have been more powerful; it is hardly visible during nights.
2). Digital Meter –It is missing in 2008 Model. However in Dazzler its present
3). Waiting time – I has waited for 1 and half month after booking. Not sure how is waiting period now a days
4). Acceleration – Should have been more powerful as compared to its peers P150
Note :- I use to have servicing done for my bike after 2k for first 3 years, Now I use to go for servicing after 5K. I always use Castrol Power1 as engine oil and Use to fill petrol from HP. (Stick to any one Petrol whether HP or Indian Oil )
