The Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Book 21
Finished Reading: Feb. 21st, 2010
Wow! This book was something!! It was interesting even though I personally do not enjoy science fiction. The words used in here were heavy coz they were trying to match an alien tone, but it was different. :)
So The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a series of books and this one was its 1st part. In the story, there’s a book with the same name which is a kind of an encyclopedia of the Universe. It starts with Earth being bombed by aliens. Arthur Dent, a human had a narrow escape from the Earth with the help of Ford, an alien who was stuck on Earth for 15 years. So this process of leaving Earth or may be a planet n moving on like a tourist in other parts of the Milky Way is called “being hitched” as per this book. The people who bombed Earth found out that both Arthur n Ford were alive in some corner of their own spaceship and so they were called and thrown out in the space to die. They came out lucky coz they were sucked in by another spaceship due to its own reasons. And the owner of the spaceship, Zaphod, was some kind of cousin to Ford and so they were in safe hands. Now, Zaphod has his own ideas of finding a place which most people thought was just a fictitious place. But soon it was proved that the place existed when 3 of them including another human girl [who was hitched from Earth before it got bombed] landed there.
There, Arthur learns from an old man that Earth was just a creation of them for some kind of research MICE wanted to do and this whole place was the place where many planets were manufactured but due to recession the place was shut till the markets raised back to be able to buy such an expensive service they provided.
Mice wanted to buy Arthur’s brain so that they did not have to build another Earth [the previous one being bombed by the bad aliens] and wait for another millions of years to get the answer to the question or vice versa. But Ford n others disagreed to the deal and ran out from there. The story ends where Zaphod asks Arthur if he was hungry and heads towards a restaurant at the end of the Universe which is the title of the next novel. It was a nice change for me to read this one, the only problem occurred at the beginning cz I started reading without reading what the story is about and it had all those alienatic kindda of words which somehow were cool when you read them aloud. ;)
In the end, there were 2 places where I just felt a déjà vu or don't know what I though I’ve seen that place myself ha-ha. Sure, I’m looking forward to read the Part II sooner or later.
