Easily the second best in the franchise

With the whole harry potter fans rushing to theaters to watch the 5th franchise, I'm one of those few lucky to watch the first show on the world's largest IMAX-3D screen. I have to say the effect was pretty amazing and the last 20 minutes is in the 3D format.

In short, the movie was great. It was better than all the other sequels I've seen this year(except Die Hard 4.0). Full marks to David Yates and the new scriptwriter for coming up with .what to say. a Muggle-friendly movie?(though I'm not one!). The movie is more about our heroic kids coming of age. The movie is much darker than the previous editions and focuses much on character development than all the CGI which in fact is a characteristic of any good movie.

The director has style, I should say! A few mentionable scenes are the encounter with Grawp(Hagrid's giant half-brother) and the kiss between Harry and Cho(no matter what, this was my favorite scene in the book!). But I would have preferred him to be faithful to the book in a few case like Dumbledore's escape from the ministry or the final encounter between D'dore and Lord Voldemort(Oh c'mon! get a grip!).

Imelda Staunton has put up a memorable performance as Doloros Umbridge, Hogwarts' new head-master. Her squeaky little voice helps her a lot and she was excellent! The performance is worthy of an OSCAR nomination. Pity we won't see much of her in the future franchises:( And one more example for excellent casting is Evanna Lynch for Luna Lovegood. She is so sweet and dreamy! Gary Oldman as Harry's godfather Sirius Black shows what a great seasoned performer he is. Daniel(Harry) as usual doesn't express much, Rupert Grint(Ron) acts well and Emma(Hermoine) well. overacts!

The climax at the Department of Mysteries is shot extremely well(and the CGI is great!). I actually preferred not to have seen this part in 3D which makes the images small and makes us lose the IMAX experience. Nevertheless, it was different experience.

The 5th book doesn't offer much in terms of the story as it is a kind of a link between the previous four and the upcoming two. So don't expect too much from the movie as it is just a preparation for the grand finale. I would rate this as the second best in the franchise next to The Goblet of Fire.
