Happy New Year – Entertaining Package
Desperate to join 100 plus crore club, most of the Bollywood’s big movie makers do not seem to be in the mood to look beyond the standard approach of making maximum profits through minimum risk. Bollywood’s 100 crore club movies are entertainers with high production value, action sequences with a mix of comedy, drama and romance. But unfortunately in the rat race of making it to the 100 crore club sensible cinema is taking a backseat & Happy New Year is no exception to it.
Happy New Year is a heist drama film that revolves around the story of a team of six losers. Charlie(Shah Rukh Khan) has to take revenge from Charan Grover(Jackie Shroff), a diamond merchant who betrayed his father Manohar(Anupam Kher). Charlie(Shahrukh Khan) builds a team of people whom he calls Charlie’s Angels to participate in World Dance Championship which will lead them to the diamonds they want to steal. Nandu Bhide(Abhishek Bachchan), Jags(Sonu Sood), Tammy(Boman Irani) and Rohan(Vivaan Shah) along with bar dancer Mohini(Deepika Padukone) who train the team for the championship. How the team of losers manages to sneak out the diamonds from the world’s safest locker is what the film entails.
Happy New Year is not only entertaining but it has emotions, a certain sensibility, thrills and surprises. The flip side of the film is that its pace remains inconsistent. There are points where the film runs little slow but catches up with the dance, comedy & action sequences that follow. Add to that, there are certain scenes in the film which go onto defy logic. HNY would have become more gripping if it was original. Many scenes are taken from other films and then they are churned out together. What suffers badly in this process is the novelty of the idea and presentation.
Shahrukh Khan proves his supremacy yet again. He makes absolutely no mistakes in getting his act together. There's no denying the fact that he plays the perfect hero who can act effortlessly, fight in style and charm the audiences. Shahrukh is extremely good in action sequences and is terrific in comedy situations. He has amazing ability to make the most difficult movements look so easy. He really needs to applaud the way he carries the film on his shoulders.
Deepika Padukone has all it takes to be a top star, the personality, the looks and she is supremely talented too. Standing in the same frame as Shahrukh and getting it right is a great achievement. Abhishek Bachchan in comedy roles is getting perfection. He is a complete revelation. He enacts his part with style. Vivaan Shah is natural & stands on his feet all through, not getting swayed while sharing the screen space with the topmost star. Boman Irani has once again proved that when it comes to getting under the skin of his character then he surely knows the art of doing so. Sonu Sood gives a decent performance.
Director Farah Khan true to her signature style of making movies, she delivers on her promise of an entertaining package. Farah Khan knows her priorities and most importantly, knows exactly what her target audience wants. The execution of a number of sequences clearly shows Farah's growth as a storyteller. She has a very unique style of filmmaking. She follows no fixed formula and is not afraid to try anything and everything wacky just for the sole purpose of providing entertainment. Vishal-Shekhar's music is good. Most of the songs are visually enticing. Songs like Lovely, Indiawaale and Manwaa Laage are a treat to watch.
Overall HNY is an entertaining movie targeted at the hardcore masses. What really works for the film is its massive star cast, spectacular visuals & the skilled performances by each and every member of its cast. If one is looking for entertainment, then the film provides it but on the quality front, it is just average movie.
