My Experience-B.Tech(Comp.Sc.),2006 passout. Review on Guru Nanak Dev University

Lots must have changed since 2006 but I will tell you about my experience. I was amazed actually to see that no review had been written about GNDU till date, also no review about PU. So let me share my experience and may be it will shed some light over various aspects of GNDU.

GNDU, Amritsar has a long history, it was established way back in 1969. It today has 37 Departments (having various courses) and around 5000 students in the main campus. It has regional campuses in Jalandhar, Gurdaspur and various colleges which are affiliated to it. Now talking specifiallly about Maharaja Ranjit Singh Department/Computer Science and Engineering Department where I spent the 4 exciting/formative years of my life.

I joined B.Tech(Comp Sc & Engg) course in the year 2002. I was a little late to join the college so the classes were already on the roll and students from all parts of mostly punjab and north had arrived. First day - I was ragged by the Seniors badly (later turns out they were my classmates only), so you can say it was a twisted kind of a start. Later most of these guys who ragged me on the first day of college became bestest of my buddies. The one thing which stands out or differentiate a university environment from college is the Diversity which it offers - you are not only bunch of techies put together in a place but there are people with diverse backgrounds pursuing different courses - Pharmacy, Arts, Architecture, Food Processing and Technology, M.Com, MBA to name a few. So its greater exposure on offer and if you can utilise it to fullest then u can actually grow as a person. Back in 2002 (kinda slump was going on in SW industry then), the last year's placements was not the criteria to join naturally for most of us, but scope in the future was one thing which was actually backing everyone's decision. The course followed was what is mostly followed in all the technical colleges. Faculty - some were good (JK Sir - Maths to name one of them) and some were extremely bad(will not name anyone). But overall the quality was ok, which actually gives you a chance to study on ur own whole curriculum which actually in the end makes you quiet self-sufficient. Though for me this self sufficiency came into play only a day before the exam. The environment was chilled, classes were there but not too hectic. So one usually got the chance to pursue whatever interests (whatever....). There was a lot of scope for extra-curricular activities - Cricket, football, thrownball, table tennis, basket ball, volley ball, etc.......University boasts of one of the best swimming pool in north, then there is a big indoor stadum, Hockey Turf on which international matches had been played, a big ground for sport activities (its huge almost equal to area of many colleges). Time went by flying -sitting in OAC (open air canteen), Library roof top, in hostel's common room, outside the department, in Bhola's Canteen, ............There was nothing to feel tensed about - Cos only time of tension was- internals, and externals, and ofcourse vivas (taken in order to humiliate - what all you have learnt?????).

2 years went by like this....Then 3rd year at the end of which university have placement season. Senior's batch got great placements.....so all in our batch were quiet hopeful. Firstly, Satyam gave offer to top ten guys of University.....some refused......I took up (not to join later, cos went in for my higher studies), , , , , then Wipro, Cogni, Patni, HCL, Amdocs.......etc etc came later in june and whole batch was placed. So what was my (or most people's) main concern before joining, got fulfilled.....Other concern was knowledge and growth. See growth will be individualistic term so wont dwell much in it, but yes knowledge was one thing I think everyone had to put in more of their own efforts to achieve it. Partly may be because of a little laid back attitude of students(including ME ofcourse) and also of faculty. So this was one thing which I think was lacking - enthu.......But it was seen aplenty as the new batches joined(our juniors). Also because GNDU by then had become much better reputation-wise for providing technical education, it also became most preferred college under Punjab CET (REC jal became NIT). Placements were getting better year by year, I remember I was offered to sit for more companies, but I denied.....cos I had already made my decision.

Overall - Great experience, made friends for life........Got the coveted degree.....became an Engineer :-). Infrastructure is great, you get all recreational facilities, etc......big library (u will get all books you can imagine)......Course - good, Faculty- ok.......I will give 3 to 3.25 out of 5 overall.......
