I Read the article by a fellow MS member, https://mouthshut.com/readreview/34263-1.html
It was an unbiased article documenting the pros of GSM. I just wanted to pour in my thoughts about CDMA. Being in telecom industry and having used both CDMA & GSM Based cell-phones, I thought it would be fitting to disclose the comparisons.

CDMA is a recent technology alright. But it had it's predecessors in FHSS which was widely used by the US Military till they de-classified the technology in late 80s when Qualcomm came up with a better and enhanced CDMA technology.

Logically CDMA had it's roots older than GSM as it was used in WWII, Cuban Missile Crisis et al. The technology was tested effectively in 1991 for cellular communications.
Hongkong was the first one to implement CDMA.
If you take the large wireless operators in US, most of them use the CDMA technology. Big firms such as Sprint, Verizon wireless et al support CDMA, while T-mobile and Cingular support GSM.
CDMA, comes up with

Increased security for wireless communications
Duplex conversations
increased efficiency that allows a large network to handle traffic effectively (better return for buck spent)
Better battery life for phones as low power consumption
Better capacity and reach,

This means that it has cons too.

No international roaming
Newer technology
proprietary technology
WCDMA will not be available in Europe/asia till 2005 while GSM successor GPRS is almost ready

Right now, GSM is a clear winner with 5-1 usage demographics If you wanna have a worldwide coverage, go with GSM for now.
I am a GSM phone holder for now.
Hope that was useful.
