The film is about four good for nothing guys are who up to no good. The story is about the lives of these four college friends, Gopal (Ajay Devgan), Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor), Mahadev (Arshad Warsi) and Laxmi (Sharman Joshi).
When you have tough guy Vasooli (Mukesh Tiwari) chasing them…When you have an old, blind couple (Paresh Raval and Sushmita Mukherjee) dying to meet their grandson Samir again…When you have a 2-in 1 Samir – Laxman’s body, Gopal’s voice… When you have one pretty girl Nirali[Rimi Sen] and four guys in love with her…When you have cook who is also a martial arts expert … When you have gangster Babli Bhai and Sattu Supari wanting to rob the blind couple’s house. That sums up Golmaal!
Story / WriterNeeraj Vora comes up with a winning story. The premise is simple yet effective. The real winner is the crackling screenplay which is superb. The film moves at a breakneck pace and never lets up. The sequence of events that unfold one after the other never get boring at all-infact they get better frame after frame.
Rohit Shetty as a director is in top form and this no doubt ranks as one of the best comedies in recent time.To make an entire cinema full of people laugh constantly for just over two hours is not an easy feat yet Rohit Shetty efficiently manages this. Golmaal is one film which doesn't make you smile or giggle-it makes you laugh.
The events that unfold are so fast at times that you are laughing constantly until you have tears in your eyes and your stomach hurts.Just as you think the film couldn't get any funnier...the second half happens!! The film is a clean comedy all the way and reminds one of golden days of comedy way back in 1980s.
Himesh Reshammiyas music is keeping in sync with the ambience of the film. All the songs are melodious and have been picturised with style and panache. The songs have been shot with slick MTV style precision and the choregraphy is superb.
Dialogues by Neeraj deserve a special mention as they are simply brilliant. A film of this genre relies heavily on witty dialogues and Vora doesn't disappoint.Some of the dialogues were being missed at times due to the roar of laughter.
Ajay as Gopal steals the show! The actor who till now was only known to suit serious roles proves his versatility in a outright comic performance which defies stereotype and is on the borderline of comic genius. The actor lets himself go totally loose on screen as the goofy Gopal. His facial expressions are simply fantastic and although he goes over-the-top at times he still manages to extract laughter unlimited. His delivery well done too. The chemistry between Arshad and Ajay is simply crackling on screen and it is evident both are having a lot of fun which have further enhanced their performances.Sharman underplays his part very well.
Tusshar springs a surprise with his performance. This is one of the first Tusshar performances I have enjoyed in a long time and he does manage to make the viewer laugh. He is spirited, and the manner in which he keeps trying to speak did manage to raise a few laughs. He came across as fresh on screen and given that I had no expectations from Tusshar he did well.
Rimmi is nothing more than glamdolls here and all she is required to do is look good-which she does well. Paresh and Arshad are two actors who rise above the script with their performances and timing and yet again the two actors do that here with success. The scenes with them in the enterprise liven the film a lot .
Sushmita Mukherjee is great in her role. She plays her with conviction and one wishes the talented lady gets more roles in the future.Manoj Joshi, Vrajesh Harjee ,Mukesh Tiwari are all apt in their part.
All up Golmaal is a thoroughly enjoyable comedy which will leave the viewer laughing from start to finish though it is illogical.But let it be damned and there is no point in even counting the flaws when the film is this entertaining..
