I visited Golden Temple - Amritsar in Dec 2010 with my friends. I remember those days when we all booked our tickets in a bus from ISBT Delhi to Katra, Jammu.
Actually we planned first to go "Ma Vaishno Devi Temple" then we will go to Golden temple Amritsar. And we did the same after visited Ma Vaishno Devi Mandir. We took our tickets from Katra, Jammu to Amritsar and early morning approx 4 AM we reached Amritsar. It was so cold that day. First we find a Chai ka Dhaba and took a cup of tea then we moved to Golden Temple. We reached Golden Temple at sharp 5 AM early in the morning.
Golden Temple is also known as Harmandir Sahib that means "The abode of god". It is the holiest Gurdwara of Sikhism.
Start With Langar:
And yes we were lucky that the "Langar" was just started and we took some prasad(poori sabji and halwa) from that langar. But before taking that prasad we just wash our mouth from the water which was coming from a pipe and draining in a pool. You can't believe that water was so cosy and warm in such a cold temperature.
Free Service by Visitors:
One thing I noticed at this place that there were not a single servant or sweeper for make temple clean or any other work. Yes all the work was doing but the people like us were doing these task like sweeping, put sandals, shoes at one place and other works. I really impressed by this activity by humans. We also participated this service for approx 20 minutes and then moved in to the temple.
Holy Water Pool
When we entered in to the temple we saw a big pool of water as seen in pictures and movies. People think the water of this pool is holy water therefore almost every people was bathing in that tank. We also took a bath in that pool however it was so cold.
The Real Golden Temple:
After taking the bath we stand up in a que which was going to the main Golden temple. After standing approx 1 hour in that Que we finally reached the main temple. The temple was just located in the middle of water. The colorful fishes were looking so beautiful all around the temple boundary.
Local Sightseeing:
There are some other places in Amritsar which you can visit. We only visited the 3 places
Jallianwala Bagh: A historical place and a public garden in Amritsar.
Durgiana Temple: This temple is just copied by Golden temple. But it's not a golden temple. But you can visit this place.
Wagah Border:
Wagah border is also a good place to visit in Amritsar. Actually Wagah is a village it is few kilometers away(Approx 31 KM) from Amritsar. But it is a good place to visit. You must visit here the March fast which occur on daily basis by Indian and Pakistani soldiers.
Overall we have a very good experience with Golden Temple Amritsar, Punjab.
