SHORT SUMMARY: DONT DO ULTRASOUND IN THE SAME HOSPITAL WHERE YOU DO THE SURGERY OR TAKE A SECOND OPINION FROM ANOTHER HOSPITAL.
At the outset let me tell you though, that the doctors working there might be good. I am not blaming any doctor but I am sure may not allowed peacefully to do their work, because of the money minded management.
I chose Global because it was close to my office and hence logistically it is easier.I went to take an ultrasound for my wife - She had GBP(Gall Bladder Polyp) and I had been watching it through ultrasound for a long time. I am aware that GBP is of no worry until it reaches 1cm.
I took the ultrasound last week at Global Hospital. I was not aware(or it didnt strike me) that abdominal Ultra sound is to be taken with empty stomach but with lots of water . ie, we should not have food before taking the Ultrasound.
Being in this profession, this should have been their first question. BUT TO OUR SURPRISE THEY NEVER ASKED THIS. They simply took the ultrasound with no care about the pre-requisites.
After taking ultrasound they reported that it has reached 10mm(1cm) and hence I need to immediately operate it . That day evening, the "co-ordinator" called me and said there are some procedures before the surgery and that I could come to the hospital to know about the procedure.
AT that moment I was very happy that somebody is following up so closely. But they started "following up " very frequently - that is, 2-3 times a day.
I was cautioned by my well-wishers about such "hasty procedure" and hence wanted to take a second opinion, if possible a second ultrasound.
In the mean time, I went to the hospital - the endocrinologist was very genuine. His approach and the need to remove the gall bladder was all very genuine. But only that he was working on a wrong report given to him.
After doing the second ultrasound check from some other place, I found that that growth was only half that was specified in Global - that is NO NEED OF SURGERY AT ALL.
Reason for this: It is very difficult to exactly measure the growth and there are always clerical errors. Since the hospital showed no interest in informing the patient about the prerequisites they get to view only very vague ultrasound - they easily turn this "vagueness"to their advantage. If proved wrong also, they could say- "patient didnt come with proper pre-requisite procedure". Net result - Best case - an unwanted surgey that could cost you upto Rs.70, 000 or worst case, an ultrasound that could fetch the hospital some Rs.2000 atleast.
When I was taken to the insurance section, due to some other issues(which was acceptable by me), they said I will not get the insurance. But "magically" after the co-ordinator came to know of this, the "follow-up" stopped.
connecting all the dots, it is very clear that the hospital is totally working for money. I repeat- the Doctor was very genuine but what he could do with an improper report that indicated him the necessity of a surgery.?
I may be wrong - The hospital may be satisfying thousand other patients who were there when I went. Please take my inputs with diligence and do your homework. This is just an experience from my side and no way an advice to you.
the lessons that I learnt:
1. DONT TAKE ultrasound in a hospital(esp. multi speciality) for the simple reason that they may manipulate the report.(for small surgeries they can do this). Take it from an independent scan center.
Nothing wrong in taking a second opinion or a second scan, which clarifies many things.
Dont panic when such institutes say "Surgery/Anaesthesia/ procedure/ tests" These are very big terms for small issues that take us to operation theater, which could be avoided with some caution/awareness from our side.
About the ratings:
I dont find any issues with the staff - they were kind. But the focus of the management over money is the issue and not the staff who were actually nice, including the co-ordinator who did her job well.
Doctor was good and experienced and took enough time to explain. But Right person in a wrong hospital.
