I am sitting on a cliff , greenery around me ,chatting with the love of my life with me , I call her honey but ordinary mortals like you call her Sharon Stone !!! . As I reach for the Enter key to say I love you , I get up startled , bleary eyed , oh my my what a dream I tell myself and I stretch my arms and as I move towards the cloak I see another love of my life beside me , I caress her body touch her buttons and put her on … She is the computer which gives me access to the Internet and all the loveliness within her , I cannot live without her , a day without checking my mails , surfing , chatting ….. should be hell for me …
Any of you with these symptoms … well then !!! welcome to the Forum of Net addicts. Internet started in the nineties and took the world by storm, this interlinking of various servers and computers worldwide in a web provided people with a storehouse of information both pleasant and unpleasant. For all technological innovations and positive inventions there is always negativity involved and so is the case with the Internet.
Addiction is a phase where human is attracted to a particular vice or a certain habit which he/she regularly follows and cannot do without it. We have seen a lot of addictions in all these centuries , Alcohol addiction, drug addiction and now the brand new addiction … Internet Addiction.
Do you remember … those days when we used to wait for 5 pm in the evening when we would be off to meet all of our friends , fooling around playing around …. We don't see such gaiety and fun anymore , all the kids still play cricket and football and with each other but at Playstations on the Internet sitting in the comfort of their homes. There is a saying in Malayalam which when translated goes like When had in excess even Nectar is poison. This is exactly the case with internet , we refer the net for checking our emails , surfing webpages for information and even write reviews on MS , but being extremely dependent on it poses a lot of problems -
Health - it affects our health in an adverse manner , constantly exposing your eyes to the computer monitor damages the eyes , most of us don't follow the correct posture while sitting at the computer table giving one neck and shoulder problems. Following the correct posture and doing certain exercises would help you and take as many breaks as possible , staring at a distant object helps rejuvenate ones eyes.
Obsessive Nature - Hey you , don't touch the PC , I wanna surf !!! God help me I cant surf today this blasted line is not working …. What can I do .. , are you getting off the PC or wanna see some brute force huh !!! what say ??? . We become obsessive very easily and addiction too forces us to act such manner. We must treat this need that arises as purely material … the world is not gonna cave in if you don't check ur mails or if you don't chat with your friend today.
Pornography , Violence
The Internet has brought in vast amounts of knowledge and information and along with it extreme Pornography and violence … one can easily access such sites . The question that arises is that do we need access to all this … We hear of numerous killings in the news like … A thirteen year old boy pumped bullets into his classmates killing 5….
I agree that television and movies too aid this , but the kind of accessibility to such information and the graphic details are not available on Televisions and Movies.
Family culture
The internet threatens to kill the family culture … sitting together and have a ball of a time, moms ,dads ,brothers, sisters all playing games , going for picnics all seem to be a distant past. All the kid does is come right from school and plonk in front of the computer.
Time and Money
Time is precious , every second of our life is precious and we must use it intelligently. Getting an Internet connection in India is not easy , the mammoth telephone bills and Dial up charges , or the cable net charges are quite expensive. Save time save money use the net as an investment … that is where you can reap good returns which are useful to you.
Lets us all use the Internet merely as a tool for gaining knowledge and information , as a means of communication and the like. Let us not allow the Net to rule over us as we are the ones that rule it !!!
