I am a 4th year student at a college under IP University, Delhi and I think I can give you tips on Engineering Colleges.
Now first thing first
The admission in most engineering colleges is through the combined score of their entrance exam and your Senior secondary score. So try to do well in both the exams.
For the most prestigious colleges like IITs, IISC, IIST and ISM, you have have to write the appear in the JEE Mains Exam which contains PCM of 120 marks each that add up to 360. If you qualify, you will then need to qualify the Jee advanced too. If you get a rank under, then you can get admisssion into those collges.
However for NITs and IIITs, you dont need to qualify the Jee advanced. If you get a good rank, say 10k then you will have the opportunity to join these Top colleges. Check out the closing ranks to get an estimate how good rank youn need.
Here category plays a role too. You know how poor the education system is but I suggest you to keep putting efforts and not think of the Outcome. Else, you will feel depressed.
As I chose IP University I had to go through the IPU Common Eligibility Test. After normalizing it with the 12th Score, I had got a rank of 16, 500. It is not considered a very good rank even in ipu however I was able to get the admission.
IPU is a deemed university which means that 85% of its seats are reserved for Delhi candidates, only 15% are for Outsiders. Though you can get admission into private colleges through management quota, but I don't recommend that as it may cost you a lot of money. The same goes for Colleges in other states.
The fee structure in engineering colleges vary a lot. In case of IPU, private colleges fee is nearly 70k to 100k a year while in government colleges its 35k.
However in Top colleges, the fees tend to be High. 100k and plus, irrespective of whether the College is private or Govt. As they provide High standard education and world class labs.
As a student, your focus should be only upon the exam and make sure you prepare well enough because thats what that will eventually determine your worth.
I must tell you there is already a tough competition in this field of work but dont lose hope. I will say do your best and forget the rest. If you get the desired college, well and good else move on. There are still many opportunities in life.
Thanks
