A general thought on Computers. Well this I guess only people who find Computers interesting or work with computers and have a minimal knowledge of Computers will find this interesting and maybe thought provoking.  It also relates mainly to the gaming industry which has entertained us for many years.

First the Gaming developers announce their games 3 years in advance(Max Payne was announced 5 years prior to release) and then make us wait in anticipation and then what happens! You can’t play the game. Why? Because you just do not have the cash to upgrade the computer to play that game. Why did my PIII 450 bought just a couple of years ago fail to play the latest games except at the lowest resolution and at the pace of a snail’s movement? Why do the gaming developers do this:-

1) They are being paid by the hardware manufacturers

2) They have being complacent. *

Major graphic card makers like NVIDIA, Matrox, ATI, Kyro, have played on our never ending desire to mimic reality. There can be no other plausible reason for NVIDIA to churn out new graphic card every 6 months. For those who don’t know the Geforce4 Graphic Card is already at the market. Barely 6 months after the launch of Geforce3. What can be the reason for NVIDIA to churn out so many new cards, if game maniacs did not buy them and gaming developers did not support them. If NVIDIA wasn’t supported by these people so much then maybe the developers would have concentrated more on gameplay than on the wowee effects that they are so proud of in their game.

Gaming Developers also take the advantage increase in CPU megahertz power. Do you think that your Internet Browser will run three times faster on a 1500 MHz processor than a 500 MHz processor? No way! Any new computer hardware will need specially written codes and processors to extract the extra performance. Game makers want more raw power as it will disburden them from tweaking their codes to optimization and to create more spectacular graphics than focus on gameplay.

Console game developers are a completely different lot. They don’t have the luxury of waiting for new consoles or processors. The console stays around for quite a few years until an upgrade is launched. If they want better graphics, they try to learn the intricacies of the machine and churn out better looking games year after year. Some games don’t even look like they are running on the same console. They are just that good.

So why must PC games like me suffer like these, why do I have to empty my bank balance and beg my parents every time a new game comes around?

I don’t see any answer for that. I only hope that these PC game developers understand and assume their responsibility. After all, not everyone will have a 1 GHz processor with 256 MB Ram and a Geforce card to play Max Payne. Do they?

P.S – Anyways these are my games to look out for the next 12 months to come. Do  M2M me if you have any good information of these games.

1)Counter Strike – Condition Zero   Your right, a single player campaign mode for the smash hit mod of half life with superb AI and new weapons.

2)Doom III - Doom is back with awesome graphics which threaten to bring even the Geforce III to its knees.

3)Duke Nukem Forever - The original bad guy and saviour of our babes is coming back to life this time with a sexy female sidekick.

4)Soldier of Fortune II - The sequel to last years massively violent PC game. Expect to blast even the eyeballs of your enemies here!

5)WarCraft III- What do you want me to say, it is WarCraft baby! Expect some awesome RTS gaming here.

There, so keep collecting money, you will need some serious hardware to run these games.
