The Beginning

Science and technology have given us several instruments and gadgets. There has been tremendous progress in both science and technology. Science experimented and found new methods/approaches and components which then technology used to build newer instruments. Cell phone is a part of that. We may recall the radios of say 25-30 years ago all of which were big. The key components in them were tubes, triodes and diodes and these resulted in outsized instruments. I remember, even in the late sixties tubes were being used. The first computer that was being made in an Institute of great repute occupied a whole big hall and it was still under assembly.

This was the first step in the direction of miniaturization through solid state components. Solid state components were very small in sizeand worked more efficiently. It is the chip that has revolutionized electronics. Data collection has become so easy. You have all kinds, attractive look in the cell and you can take your pick. There are also touch phones for the user’s convenience.

The Instrument

The instrument is available in many varities and colours. Functions have multiplied with the passage of time. Cell phone has graduated from the simple small telephone to multipurpose instrument. It now has not merely talking ability but much more; you can set ring tones of your favourite songs so that when you receive a call it is your song which wakes you up, you have radio included into it and FM stations and you can listen to songs while jogging, traveling or may be even sleeping. Also for a person like me, there is a lot of annoying distraction in that the Reliance Communication, I have reliance cell, does tun tun all the time giving songs and different caller tunes for a low price, according to Reliance. The result is the charge of the cell is finished because of this. I use my cell very rarely but receive all unnecessary calls of salesmen of all ‘gharanas’. If you like, you can send messages too, it has SMS facility built into it. Now you have even a camera and take pictures at will and keep them, send them and show to your dear ones and also be mischievous if you like. The accessories are such that you do not have to put the instrument to your ears. There are attachments with earphones and microphone so that while walking your cell is in your pocket and your hands are just playing with a small microphone. I remember long back when I had not seen the marvel at work, I used to wonder to whom this fair lass is talking, cannot be to herself! Then slowly the reality dawned on me and I stopped wondering only admiring. This was a common site at the airports long back but now every street has this concoction, people in bus, car, motor bike school college, everywhere.

Applications

Cell phone is a boon in many situations. The fact that with a cell in your possession you can contact anybody anywhere is such a relief. If you are stranded somewhere, may be you bike/car has failed and you have a cell you can have help soon. Business people find it of use beyond imagination. Workers, contractors, shopkeepers, all find the little gadget in their hands as the most valuable possession. Progress of work, orders, the contact for further business all can be and is done on the mighty little facility. You can see the cell in operation everywhere, in bus, train, car, bike, taxi, auto and even on bicycle! Such is the reach and utility and may be even fascination for the little friend. I find senior school girls not to speak of other girls and ladies talking through the cell in stores, bazaar, stations and almost any place. They inform of their whereabouts to their near and dear ones, friends, parents at home and anywhere you can think of. Isn’t it great? FM stations and listening to music is like carrying your transistor with you all the time. The old small transistors which we carried with us to overcome the boredom, not long ago are things of the past. I have two of these and don like to throw them but there is no other option available and I will have to finally throw! Same is the case with the advent of the digital camera. Old SLR cameras have lost all value. Initially costing tens of thousands of rupees are of no value today. This is the worst that happens with advances in technology. The old has to give way to the new, no sentimental attachments here. Many banks are announcing banking facilities on the cell. The new cell phones have huge memory too. Result is you have internet facility too in them and you use them for emails. Store lot of data and information.

The marvels of science and technology are unlimited. Every new gadget comes with so much more that the old becomes obsolete and useless. You have to flaunt the new contraption only to be alive to the changes that the world is witnessing. Most of these changes are progressive and good and add to convenience.
