I have watched Forrest Gump atleast 5 times out of sheer admiration - admiration for every single aspect that went into making this landmark movie. I will watch it many more times, trust me.
On the surface the story is about a stupid guy who wanders through life and makes it big. Dig a little deeper and you'll realise that there's a lot more hidden underneath. Its about the American way of life and its simplicity. Its about how even the most average person in the US can make it big if his effort on a task is single minded. Its about how the American way of life is a great leveller. The beautiful thing is that the average American can lead a comfortable life the way he wants to lead it, even though he is average.
Coming back to the movie - I have rarely seen acting. Im not just talking about Tom Hanks who is ofcourse super-brilliant. Gary Sinise, Robin Wright and Sally Field deliver superb performances as well. Tom Hanks ofcourse deservedly got his Oscar for his effort. The story itself is a sweeping tale of a dim witted guy who gets pushed into the greatest of events, survives and emerges a winner. They story of how he is still true to his heart, and true to his roots. Its about how he winds despite all odds. Its about how a dim guy learns to live with and cope with a tumultuous life; where ordinary people make easy lives harder for themselves. The cinematography is spellbinding. The awe inspiring photography especially in the final scenes where Forrest runs through the mountains and the rivers is breathtaking. The sound track provides a great lift to an already rich movie.
I think this story, this movie, salutes the American way of life, about how the American people showed courage in spite of being unwittingly dragged through bad times starting from the Vietnam War.
If you like to watch inspiring movies with tremendous acting; if you like special effects with meaning, then this is the movie to watch. Watch it on a large TV screen - you wont be disappointed.
