Review : Bollywood action movies have been in oversupply since a long time, but the Khan brigade has affected somewhat the whole scenario. Action movies used to be the safest bet on the box office, Amitabh B., Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra, Mithun and Sunny deol, owe a lot to the action movies for their stardom. Since I love action movies chosing 5 is a very difficult task, but following are my all time favourites.
1. Khiladiyon ka Khiladi
I love this movie and it has one of the best choreographed action sequences, performed by one of the best action star of indian cinema, Akshay Kumar. This man excels in action sequences and matches his Hollywood counterparts (jyada ho gaya kya! ), remember they have world class technicians and the lead actors have to do nothing. ( I dont count moving legs in an empty room, with images being projected from state of the art projectors to creat the effects). His background in martial arts gives him the cutting edge in the action movies. Dont forget to watch this movie, if you have not seen it already. the fight sequence with Undertaker, the WWF superstar (okkkk! WWE superstar) is one of the highlights of the movie. You can see Ak doing stuff, which we saw in the movies of Van Dame and Stevan Seagal.
2. Jigar
Ajay Devgan returned after four-five flops (Divyashakti and others) to limelight with this movie, which was also a comeback for veteran Ajit, (yes the same old boss of Micheal and Mona Darling). Veeru Devgan did everything he could have done for his son. Actually, most people believe that it was the Veeru Devgan's concept and it was he who directed the movie. The Karate returned from being the art of villain's sidekicks' chamchas art, where our heros like Dharmendra and Shatru bhaiya, just deliver one Ghoonsa to the karatian , the poor chap , comes in between the fight scenes, throws some kicks and punches (i dont know which branch of martial art provided them the techniques)and he is flat on the ground.
This movie had Hussain, the Ajit's son in the movie, who got his backbone broken by Arjun in the beginning of the movie, he is one of the best martial artists, over 35 years of practice. The fight sequences were inspired from Karate Kid and other similar movies, but were sleek and properly performed (I can have some liberty to say that, as it is a bollywood movie). AK and Suniel Shetty, the hit action pair of many b-grade hit movies (Waqt Hamara Hai, Anth, Balwan, Elaan etc.) struck gold with this movie. The Rajiv Rai directed movie is one of the all time top grossers of Bollywood. Great music, brilliant performances by Naseer, Paresh Rawal, and both the Action Heroes (at least in action sequences). The movie catapulted AK and Suniel into A grade list.
4. Parinda
Though it is not in sync with the above movies, but its a great action movie. The tension is high throughout the movie and performances are probably the best of from the lead actors, (Nana, Jackie and Anil Kapoor). Here you will not find some fancy flying kicks or cars/bikes going miles into the air. This will be one of the best action movies in my list for its sheer pace, drama and tangible tension, which you can feel in you spine.
5. Karma
This masterpiece from the showman, is an example of how a great movie can be made from an ordinary and borrowed script. This multi starrer had brilliant performance by Mr. Anupam Kher in a negative role that made him star. Dilip kumar, Anil Kapoor, jacki shroff, Naseer, on a mission to save the country and you can expect everything from the showman, in this movie, that makes an ordinary movie special.
