Review : My husband has been buying Esquire magazine off and on for some time now and I initially resented the money spent on it. Although the US edition is comparatively cheaper, it is an expensive magazine. I always thought a good book would be better buy. Gradually, I also started reading it and believe me, it is a lot of fun.
A sophisticated, cosmopolitan magazine that does not cater exclusively for men. It has plenty to interest a modern woman also. Lifestyle, fashion, attitudes, entertainment and topical affairs, Esquire has them all. I find myself looking forward to the next issue and whenever I have the opportunity, I buy it for myself.
Unfortunately, it's not an easy magazine to subscribe to, and I suspect the post master reads it too!
The layout of the magazine is consistently innovative and original. The features are generally informative, whacky and have excellent photo content. Unlike most magazines which have a life expectancy only up to the next issue, Esquire has an astonishing amount of material and is good for many months.
Most articles have been written by persons well known in their respective fields of interest, each with their own slightly skewed view of the world and their work. The contents cannot be described as high brow, but then the magazine doesn't pretend to be like the New Yorker or as blatantly of sexual content like the Playboy or as a fashion magazine like GQ.
It can best be described as a blend of the all these -some fashion, some fiction and of course, the eternally interesting foibles of sexuality. ''Answer Fella'' answers all questions no matter how silly they seem - the advice column is hilarious as are the reviews on books, music and films. Interviews with famous people are more than simply biographical notes, they are informal and witty - I think they give you an insight into what makes them different, more successful than you and me.
There is an easy rapport between the interviewer and interviewee. Most features have a tongue in cheek style and the underlying message is don't take yourself or life too seriously. I have always believed that humour is a great indicator of intelligence - Esquire makes me feel intelligent!
Lets all drink to that!
