All love stories are told; still it is love stories which are getting sold the most. All crime stories are told and still it is crime stories which hold the attention of audience the most. Don 2 is yet another thriller from the classic anti Hero, Don.
Don (Shahrukh Khan) surrenders himself to Interpol officers (Om Puri & Priyanka Chopra) and is now in Malaysian Jail. His mission is to release Vardhan (Boman Irani) from jail to get a key of secret from his dead business partner. Together they find a video with which they can blackmail the head of a famous German bank. Their plan is to get the original currency plates from the bank vault. The Interpol officers get their information and are on alert. Don starts his mission once again but this time he has a plan to walk free as well after the incident. No prize for guessing that he will do that but how he does that is what makes Don 2 interesting.
Except for the first ten minutes or so, the movie is very focused on the mission in hand. Not many missions, but single one and the work is started from early on. If you look at it critically there is nothing new in the concept. Conman, bank robbery, note plates all schemes are been used. Then it is the treatment that makes the movie special and affective. Hardly your attention divert from the screen proceedings. Focused screenplay and very good dialogues are plus points of the film. The director, Farhan Akhtar did an excellent job in making the movie a perfect thriller. Except in few places like the switch of attitude by the Don approaching the climax the director manage to keep the momentum in place. He gets best out of his cast and crew. Moreover he do justice to the brand 'Don', in fact I liked it better than the Don (1).
Shahrukh Khan did a very good job in this Don appearance. His look is not perfect but it is definitely different. His performance is competitive and no wonder he is back to business in Don Style! Priyanka Chopra did her role convincingly. She didn't have much to do in this Don dominating cinema but she tried her best to fit the bill. Boman Irani impresses once again. Comedy and action, this actor is wonderful. Lara Dutta got a small but key role and she did it well. Om puri is wasted in a very small role. The good looking Kunal Kapoor is impressive. Overall performance is very good.
Songs of the film is a let down. It simply didn't work. Add to the worry, choreography was way back of expectation. Pretty average is the best description it can avail. On the other hand, the back ground scores were brilliant and it was gelling well with the situations.
Cinematography is very good. It gives a Hollywood feel and why not it is quite brilliant. The editor well supplements the proceedings with excellent editing. All those action scenes are edited with an accurate meter, knowing the pulse of the audience. The length of the film however could have been crisper say for 10 minutes with the price of few scenes. Production designs are adequate. Action scenes, especially the car chase is done brilliantly.
On the minus side, the attitude change of the anti hero, though for temporary time and with a purpose diluted the perfect pace maintained till the midway of climax. (Thankfully they managed to bring back the thrill within the gap of five minutes.) There are some continuity problems as well. Firstly in the car chasing scene and in the escape scene in the climax, but yes, it is not that important as many may even not notice it. As told earlier, the songs could have been better. Om Puri's character could have been little more powerful.
Overall, the movie succeeds in keeping the thrill throughout and thereby is a very good entertainer which will not hurt any sector or audience but entertain all who love action/thrill genre movies. There are no light moments in the film, except for the scene where Boman Irani listen to the detailing of a counterfeit note when the action is happening outside which was a fun moment. Action packed thriller, Don 2 is a very good watch for this Christmas New Year Season.
