So It Begins…
The film begins with a strict Punjabi Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) on the street of London feeding the pigeons. Having left India, 20 years back he has the desire to go back to the Punjab. His wife played by Farida Jalal, is devoted to him as a traditional Indian wife as she calls him everyday asking if he has reached work safely. They have two daughters, Rajeshwari and Simran, (Kajol) who is always dreaming about her unseen man.
Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan) arrives late for his graduation at the University and is nervous as his friend tells him one person has failed and their name will be announced. Raj unaware is shocked when he learns that it is he who has failed out of the whole university. The next scene takes us to Raj’s house where we meet Dharam Malhotra (Anupam Kher) who is very proud that Raj has followed in the footsteps of his family and failed. Only he has failed in London. Raj is then offered to join the family business but he rejects as he feels he wants to go to Europe. His father agrees as he has spent all his life working and would like his son to enjoy life.
We are taken back to Simran’s house where her father gets a letter from his good friend in the Punjab requesting for Simran’s hand in marriage to his son Kuljit. Simran is devastated as she walks out of the room, leaving her father thinking she is embarrassed. In anger she tears up the pages of her diary and says ‘I forgot. I have no right to dream.’
Simran’s friend asks her to accompany the rest of her friends on a Tour Of Europe which will be a month long. Simran decides to ask her mum but she tells her that her dad will make the decision.
It is late at night when all the shops are closed and Raj and his friends (one of them being Karan Johar) are desperate for beer. Karan Johar is sent to ask for beer at Baldev’s shop and is rejected. Then Raj jumps out of the car and pretends to have a headache. He tricks Baldev into thinking that he is ill and says, ‘After all an Indian helps another Indian.’
He grabs the parocetamols and tells Baldev he will buy something else and picks up the beer. Baldev asks for him to put the beer down and Raj in a panic says that his mates want it. He throws the money and in a panic breaks the murti. Disgraced Baldev returns home and tells his wife about the spoilt society.
The next morning, Simran wakes up early in order to please her father by praying and then asks to have permission to go to Europe. Luckily for Simran, the permission is granted!
Now Raj and Simran are running towards the train as they nearly miss it. Raj however, gets on first and then holds his hand out to Simran. She quickly grabs it and the camera zooms in as the hero and heroine are holding hands. In hope of impressing Simran he says, ''Have I seen you somewhere before? At Robi's party?” Simran replies coldly, “I don’t go to parties.” He tells her that her beautiful eyes remind him of his grandmothers, but Simran is not impressed. When both characters return to their own seats Raj tells his friends that Simran was all over him, yet Simran tells her friends that he was trying to impress her.
Growing close…
Raj is haggling over knives in a shop whilst Simran impatiently is waiting to buy a cow belt at the trainstation. With Raj’s delay both of them end up missing the train! Simran starts to panic as they realize the nest train in the next day. Raj tries his best in calming her down but unfortunately ends up tearing the back of her dress. Humiliated and furious Simran decides she cannot stand Raj and tells him to get lost since he has caused so much trouble for the day.
Alone on the streets of Europe, Simran decides to hitch-hike but the Swiss Police aren’t very understanding as they demand for her passport which she has left on the train! Suddenly, Raj turns up with his red car and thanks the police for finding his wife. The Swiss police decide to leave and Raj decides swearing at them with the words Al infront of the Hindi swears. Ungrateful to Raj for saving her from going to jail, Simran refuses to sit in his car but then has no other choice. Raj assures her nothing will go wrong but the car runs out of gas!
After walking into town, Raj gets the last room available from that Bed and Breakfast and tells Simran who is far from pleased. She refuses to stay in one room and goes into the barn to make her bed. Raj then enters the small barn full of hay and tells Simran you have a very nice choice. He tries his best at feeding her but she sulks. Snow begins to fall from the roof of the barn and the fire is not enough to keep both of them warm so Raj decides to drink his Cognac. Simran is appalled at his behavior and says, “Don’t you have no shame in drinking alcohol infront of a girl.” He replies simply by saying, “It’s to keep me alive, why don’t you drink some.” Raj lays his bed and say, “See you in the morning, if you live.”
Torn Apart…
As the tour draws to a close, both characters are going to the train and Raj says that if Simran looks back she loves him and he murmurs look back, look back and she does.
They arrive at London trainstation and Simran bids her farewells to Raj but she runs back to ask for his address so that she can post him an invitation. She says, “You will come won’t you?” But he leaves her surprised when he says, “No” and walks off, leaving Simran still staring at him.
Excited Simran arrives home, late at night and is welcomed by her parents and sister. However, she imagines Raj at her door but he disappears. After her father have gone upstairs Simran reveals to her mum that she has met the man of her dreams in Europe. Unfortunately, Baldev overhears this and is outraged. It’s time for Simran and family to fly off to India…
Ok so now what?
Simran has been taken to India to get married to Kuljit against her will. Raj and Simran are in love. Kuljit’s sister Preeti has also fallen for Raj and her parents have asked Raj to marry her. Baldev stands strong, as he is not going to betray his friend and let Simran marry Raj. Simran’s mother is torn between her husband and her daughter. Who will she choose?
