The very concept of a guy falling in love, failing in love , growing a beard and roaming the streets, talking to street dogs has become synonymous with the term Devdas.
Though a concept often shown in cinemas, quite a disgusting one as well( I hate people losing their lives just because they lost someone), Anurag Kashyap creates a Dev D(devender dhillon) who is much much closer to reality.
An honest admission here, due to the concept of failed love and hence failed life, I have, much like Anurag kashyap, disliked all the Devdas movies that have come out in the past. I watched the Tamil version, with Nageshwara rao and savithri and did like the performance(amazing) but still hated the concept as a whole. Out came SL Bhansali's piece of Art(Duh!!!! just kidding).
Devdas projected in a really gaudy and flashy fashion, so typical of SLBs adamence not to be even an inch closer to reality, with SRK stammering like he had epilipsy and Aishwarya with her ever seducing voice(even when she is emotional, the way she calls "Devvvvvv......" sounded tooo sexy :)), my belief got only firmer that any Devdas movie can only get worse. I was wrong.
What got me to watch this movie was the reviews and feedback from my sister(very reliable when it comes to quality of movies)
I may be a bit biased because I like the way anurag kashyap makes his movies, specially black friday. But I tried to watch Dev D without anysuch favouritism and with all the hate I had for the concept.
There is Dev and there is Paro, bringing him Lassi and paratha and what not, ever since childhood they are pretty much a thing till Dev is sent off to london for his studies. Times change the pair grow and start learning things that they have to :) and continue staying in touch. What was just mental and emotional bond, craves to become a physical bond as well and hence Dev decides to return to india( well after seeing Paro in an Open position through a photo ). He returns using his bro's wedding as excuse, spots paro and tries to satisfy his craving right away, he misses few opportunities and bangs into another Gal in between. During the haldi function, in the evening a guy who has an eye for paro talks ill of Paro's charecter which our hero, as expected believes and harshly turns away paro every time she approaches him, eventually driving paro to marry an already married man(not as old as in the other versions). Dev is crest fallen
As expected Dev goes on a drinking, smoking, potting and whoring(new term coined by me :)) spree in Delhi, wasting loads and loads of his dad's monye, driving his dad to death bed. In between he develops a liking for a prosti*ute, Chanda, who we are told became a pros because of an event in her life(related to the DPS MMS scandal). Now Dev and chanda become a thing, but dev still has a craving for Paro, which is cleared by Paro herself( excellent scene ending with a fitting reply from Paro), now our hero takes upto more of drinking, smoking and potting, and rams his Car on people who are sleeping on the footpath(BMW hit and run case). What happend to Dev, whom will he settle with(if at all) forms the rest of the story.
all the above may have been way too similar to what we saw in the earlier instalments, but what made this movie watchable(really) are
The events and Devs life in itself is bit more close to reality, nothing too flashy
Dev is not shown as a punyatma taking to drinking and other habits, It is shown to have developed during his stint in London
Dev is shown as a typical spoilt delhi brat and not necessarily spoilt only coz someone said something bad about Paro, even otherwise he is a slut(what he calls himself towards the end of the movie).
Anurag interweaves real life incidents, which have lot of relevance even today(DPS MMs and BMW hit and run) and has even tried to show the other side of these incidents. What could happen to a Girl, who did commit a mistake, but whose life got entirely spoilt due to social ridicule and neglect by own family
Movie was a contrast to SLB's version, (that is a personal point)
Performance by the actors is more collection of expressions rather than instructed acting. Special mention of Kalki (chanda) and Abhay(Dev) is a must.
The movie has a POSITIVE ENDING which is the biggest strength of the movie. Life will move on no matter whatever happens. Just coz you lost a girl, does not mean there arent others who love and care for you. Keep this in mind. this is of great significance for all those insane romeos who get influenced by movies for falling in love and also inspired by movies for failin in love. All such nuts need to watch this movie.
All said, the other installments would have satisfied a wider range of audience, whereas this version is strictly ADULTS ONLY. There is very frequent sexual reference, strong usage of abusive language and of course depiction of habits like drinking, smoking, potting etc.
The music of the movie rocks and was aptly used by Anurag, mostly in background. this helped the movie to move at an even pace. SLB has to learn this one more thing(tooo).I learn that Abhay deol conceptualized this movie, I am amazed by his guts and choice to be off beat. All in all, I loved the movie coz "At last Dev ne Paro ko mara goli"
Cheers
