Yuvan - Where art thou going?. Review on Dass Songs

I thought I will give a chance to Yuvan shankar raja, the son of maestro Ilayaraja to redeem himself and produce some really high quality, original music. So I set out hearing this album. but shock, dismay and irritation are the only feelings I got out of this. Can record companies reduce the price of albums based on the music quality? I don't understand buying a ''Bose : forgotten hero'' album and this one for the same price or nearly same price.

Yennoda Raasi: When the song starts with ''yennoda raasi nalla raasi, idhu epodhum periyavanga aasi'', you start to wonder if it is yet another a remix of a Rajini's old number by yuvan. Thankfully this one is not. This song is a folk number, probably highlighting the hero as a larger than life persona. Song starts and ends in pretty much the same way. The male voice lent by venkat prabu, shows a lot of potential but does not get anything much other than a high octave exhibition. Rating: 3/10

Saamikitta : Hariharan and Shreya Goshal have lent voice to this melody number. A good tune. Great to see Hariharan after quite some time. The small interludes with violin are pleasing. Both the singers have done a good job but it is the lyrics that let the song down. I mean, how would you justify lyrics like'' adi podi bayandangoli'' etc in this pleasing melody. Either the tune does not suit the lyrics or vice versa. But one thing to appreciate is that the lyrics are clearly comprehensible. I wish, Yuvan did the same kind of re-recording to some of his more meaningful number. But listening to this song gives you the feeling of hearing part -II of ''Mun paniya'' from the movie ''Nanda'' again by Yuvan.

Sakka podu : Another folk number sung by Sadhna Sargam and KK. KK has done a fantastic job in this song. To my knowledge this is the only original song in the album. KK's pitch seems to be too high to Sadhna sargam as her voice strains to keep in tune with KK. has some lovely music in the interludes and a very catchy beat. Again it is the lyrics that lets the song down. Overall a good number. Rating: 7.5/10

Shaheeba Shaheeba : A heavily Arabic influenced number by Hariharan , Sujatha. Yuvan has used a lot of trumpets in the interludes. These live instruments sound very pleasing, especially with the kind of hi-tech recording and mixing. But a very average song with predictable music. Somehow I get the feeling that Yuvan is making a lot of lift off, especially from Arabian music. Someone with a good collection of Arabian music can validate my suspicion.

Vaa Vaa For a moment, I thought I was hearing the recent vidhyasagar's number ''Annanoda paatu'', when this song started. Then in the interlude, the beat and the trumpets sounded alarmingly similar to ''All thota boopthy'' song from the vijay starring movie ''youth''.This song sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Mahalakshmi Iyer is a shame and disgrace to not just everyone involved in the song but to Yuvan's father Ilayaraaja. For many of you who are wondering why I am being so critical, listen to the 1985 song by Ilayaraja ''Adi ye manam nilluna nikkadhadi'' in the film ''neengal ketavai''. The charanam of the ''vaa vaa'' song is a direct lift off, a line by line copy of his own father's work. With this kind of work, I don't understand how on earth can anyone, with a little bit of conscience can claim to be the music director of the movie.

Rating: 6.5/10 for Annanoda paatu, 7/10 for All thota boopathy and 9.5/10 for Adi ye manam nilluna nikkadhadi

Nee Enthan : A very ordinary song sung by Karthik. Starts and ends in the same train kind of beat. There is nothing inspiring to write about this song. There is lyric ''Sumai thaangi kallaga, udhavaadha kallaga, urumaari pona indha persugal azhagu'' translated as ''the old people who have transformed themselves into supporting stones and useless stones are beautiful''. I am totally confuse if the poet (???) is trying to glorify old age are trying to mock it.

A very poor album. Reading this review by itself is a great sacrifice you people have done. Don't listen to the songs.
