''There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark.''

The Year was 1972 the time was that of the heady 70’s when drugs were cool and the hippies ruled. Love & Peace were to be found everywhere and a group of Architects and Interior Designers from England were recording at the famous Abbey Road Studios with EMI and ended up delivering one of the best albums ever. The Group Was Pink Floyd and the Album “The Dark Side Of the Moon”. The longest selling album of all times which broke new grounds in the annals of music.

Having lost one of their starting members in Syd Barrett who had until then been the creative head of the group to LSD and Luna –cy (Luna = Moon).

It was a conceptual album which made intelligent and ground breaking use of instruments. Feedback and FORE GROUND MUSIC with BACKGROUND LYRICS, this in itself was nothing compared to the mind blowing lyrics which reeked Pessimism in the time of Love & Peace, instead it tackled subjects like death head on and along with it the ravages of time & the two facets of the human one of good the other of evil.

It s hard to individualize this album into each separate song as it’s a flowing stream of songs which gel, blend and complement each other and it’s a sheer pleasure to listen to this album all at one time.

It all kick starts with “Breathe”, “On the Run”, ''Time”, “Great Gig In The Sky” “Breathe Reprise”, ''Money'',''Us And Them'', “Any Color You Like” and ''Brain Damage'' & “Eclipse”. All of them very powerful, concise musical statements, they also boast a cohesive thematic content.

Throughout the album what strikes you the most is Roger Waters' instrumental placement of lyrics co-mingled with Richard Wright and David Gilmore’s empowered musicianship. The band honed their ideas together as a whole and produced a true work of art. They used Gospel Singers in

''The Great Gig in the Sky'' - features almost orgasmic vocals by Claire Tory {a gospel singer}, which transport you to a higher plane.

“Time” starts off with a cacophony of a 1000 clocks going off at once. “Money” with its slot machines ringing with cash are great intros to some of the greatest songs

This was the coming of age of ROGER Waters who had taken over the mantle of the creative head of the group from Syd Barrett and his feelings of anguish over everyday life became a point that is heard quite loudly in the album.

These lyrics bear down with stark perception on a universal subject -- the simple, often trivial pressures of daily life that can lead to insanity. Still a couple of years shy of his 30th birthday, Waters had already twigged the ultimate misery of it all, and he wrought his bleak verse with bold slashes of the pen. There was no air of a false new dawn or hippy optimism about this record; rather the beginning of the end. Despairing observation that with each new day... ''Then one day you find that ten ten years have got behind you''

You’re older/ Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.''

Metaphorically speaking the album is full of deeper meaning starting off with its

Cover - a simple prism which splits a beam of light into several different colors and a black background,

The lyrics of eclipse talks about man’s willingness to commit evil and reflect another side to the world while deep inside they are somebody totally different & often we rest on the laurels of others portraying ourselves as the heros. It is best said in the song eclipse

Eclipse (Waters)

All that you touch

All that you see

All that you taste

All you feel.

All that you love

All that you hate

All you distrust

All you save.

All that you give

All that you deal

All that you buy,

beg, borrow or steal.

All you create

All you destroy

All that you do

All that you say.

All that you eat

everyone you meet

All that you slight

everyone you fight.

All that is now

All that is gone

All that's to come

and everything under the sun is in tune

but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

Prophetic words are these!!

There is a definite undercurrent of Pessimistic thinking to all this and I think Waters put it across best when interviewed about Pink Floyd. He said that in the normal world when people are presented with a glass of water filled with liquid they either say it is half full or half empty, in Pink Floyds world if they are presented with the same glass their answer is that THIS IS POISION!!

If you are new to Pink Floyd, I personally regard Dark Side as their best album and would advise you to listen to this before buying anything else. If you're not a fan, it's still difficult not to recognize the influence of this album on the evolution of rock music.

I hope you have a nice time discovering this piece of superlative, multidimensional, multifaceted (ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT AND THE MORE YOU HEAR IT, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW YOU GET OUT OF IT), ASYMMETRIC piece of art in its truest sense!!

P.S: Reposting as original went down with the setting sun
