Story:

This book was published in 1956 by R.K. Narayan though it was way back but it really suits today's life and it gives us a provoking read. This book accurately describes us the typical reality of the olden days Orthodox family situation.

This book was written in a simple and lucid language which can be read by all the people and it is very easily understandable. It reflects the unfair conservatism of a patriarchal society.

"THE DARK ROOM" is a novel written by famous writer R.K. Narayan. The story of this book revolves mainly with two women who have but one aspect common between both the women. The common thing between them is they both depend on one man for their survival.

The name of those women's are Savitri and Ramani. Savitri had not got the chance to educate herself and in the story she is a conforming housewife and a dutiful person. Her husband's name is Ramani. Ramani is running an insurance company in their village. He appointed Shanta Bhai, who is a attractive, rebellious and intimidating woman as an insurance probationer in his company.

These women's are fully depended on Ramani. Ramani started to spend his time with Shanta Bhai, which was known by Savitri and somhow she managed herself between four walls. The society and the situation made Savitri a submissive character and the victim of her husband because of hr husband's fancies.

Shanta Bhai is the only woman working in the insurance company where Ramani is working. Her character is quite admirable because she is the only woman there. After knowing this affair, Savitri tried all hr sorts of tricks to get back her husband in a dark room. But Ramani pays her no heed.

After a great frustration, Savitri committed suicide but was saved by others. But unfortunately after saving her life, half of her part was dead. She continued her life as Savitri that she used to be.

It is a worthy book to read and will able to know about the situation of how women faces challenges in her life and how she manages her balance life with the victim. It brings us the fresh realization of the common humanity of all peoples.
