So long as you have food in your mouth, you have solved all questions for the time being - Franz Kafka
Being in Ahmedabad, where a tinge of sweetness completes almost every dish (Not that I am complaining!) but I prefer the food which my mind is conditioned to. Coming to South Indian Cuisine, I tasted sweet Sambhar here for the first time (the owner proudly shared the secret of adding jaggery instead of sugar). Somehow we were more or less restricted to fast food chains.
Dakshinayan was recommended to us by a few. To our delight, it excelled in all parameters I look for in a good eatery. Dakshinayan refers to ‘from south’. This pure vegetarian restaurant serves authentic south Indian food.
Location : Opposite, Fun Cinemas, Near Devarc Mall, SG Road. The soft sodium lights below the bright sign at around 8 p.m. gave a soothing look. The attendant wearing a black shirt and black lungi with golden border assured the first come first serve basis. We were allotted 30 minute waiting time. The spic and span covered waiting area, comfortable cushioned sofas and chairs was a thoughtful gesture. We were invited after odd 15 minutes which was nice.
Ambiance : It is a neatly spaced restaurant with 12-13 tables aligned in three columns. The tables next to the walls have wooden partitions with typical south Indian geometric border patterns not only provide space but also a very authentic atmosphere. The soft lights are soothing and sufficient. The table arrangement is done in such a way that even a large family can enjoy the meal comfortably.
Food : The menu card is not Very lavish. It definitely covers the entire authentic south Indian range and a few fusion dosas. We ordered dosas, both authentic and fusion. The crispiness and taste was completely fulfilling. We relished sambhar that was served hot and was refilled instantly upon request. The coconut chutney, tomato chutney and accompaniments served along complemented perfectly with the food. So for us the quality and quantity of food served was completely fulfilling. This restaurant serves number of mini idlis rather than serving pair of big idlis, which is a very smart idea, as it spares the customer to wrestle with the idli. People also have recommended the Uttapas and Rasam Rice but I am yet to taste those.
Service : We were immediately attended as were made ourselves comfortable and our food was served within 5-7 minutes of the order placed. The staff was very courteous and fast. It very well explained why our waiting time was reduced.
Cost : The total meal averaged out to be approximately Rs. 100 per person.
Final Verdict : A good place for all those who are craving for authentic South Indian Cuisine. Dakshinayan serves authentic south Indian food with good ambience and a smile.
