While the Japanese are trying hard to invent a robot which can behave like human beings, our own Sallu bhai has continued to live as an example of Humans who can behave like Robots. Human beings are known to emote, many of them even while wearing glasses, they laugh, cry, frown, stare and what not. Human expression shows the world or at least indicates to the world the state of an individual's mind.
With Salman khan, who has been aspiring to become an actor for close to or over two decades, What the expression(or lack of it) means is left to the viewer to decide. Net result, only intelligent viewers can watch and appreciate his acting?
Wrong, if his acting(or lack of the same) is a riddle to solve, the behavior of the movie viewers seems to a much more complex and law defying one. A movie like Dabang, which has nothing new to offer in terms of Story, good screenplay, logic becoming a massive hit can only mean
There were no releases during the week and the audience was desperate to watch a movie
Like our polls, the viewership numbers were fudged
People have started earning so much money that they want to prove to the world that they can rest for 3 hours in a theater.
I have nothing against salman as an actor, purely because he cannot act. Enough of the bashing now to the review
Dabang tells the story of chulbul pandey a not so honest but a corrupt cop in UP living with his step pop, step bro and his original mother. He goes around bashing goons and looting them instead of turning them in and trying them. Enter our villian Chedhi singh(sonu sood the only consolation in the movie), who wants sallu to join hands with him and do the looting. Sallu being sallu, refuses and what ensues is a story of family sentiment, where the mother dies, the step father denounces sallu and of course there is the compulsive heroine, the duets, the off beat way of marrying the heroine and so on.
While sallu is busy doing all this, his bro makki(arbaz khan, "Stone faced" numero deux) is so naive and gullible but is smart enough to impress a gal, talk mardangi dialogues and even steal money from his mom, is caught in a web of pyaar for his ailing pa(coz their factory got burnt) and his lady love. As usual he takes the side of the bad guy, ends up in a soup and what happens to Sallu, Arbaz et all is the story. Of course all the bad that happened to sallus family is attributed to the bad guy, the bad guy confessing all his crimes before he, tries and does not kill his target, yet again. Why cant the baddies in our cinemas just shoot their targets first and deliver their dialogues. Facts are important for the audience, not for the person who is intended to die. There is actually nothing left to tell or hide about the rest, only that audience will become restless:)
Looking at acting department, Sonu sood does really well(good body language too;) lot of it infact) apart from him dimple, vinod khanna and om puri Act. Sonakshi, our very own shot guns shot, actually does pretty well for a debutante. Since this is about acting I will not mention about sall and arbaz. By the way, only the locations or sonu sood's dialogue delivery can remind you that the movie takes place in UP. None of the actors speak in the UP accent and just insert few words in UP accent which feels obviously out of place.
I anyway do not like songs in movies, so let me not talk about them. The cinematorgraphy and camera work needs a word of appreciation(something worth appreciating). Purely because the movie takes place in a town/village in UP, the scenario had to be captured effectively.
All in all, Dabang is yet another movie from sallu, the only difference is sallu remains expression less with a moustache. That is the only thing worth mentioning about sallus performance in this movie.
By the way, I almost forgot, sallus reaction while seeing his dead mothers body is probably the best piece of acting I have seen from him. Dont miss that scene.
Nothing personal- but I expect actors to Act:)
All criticisms are most welcome. The views expressed are purely my opinion, the above review was not written under the influence of any drug:)
Adieus to the great, smart or desperate audience who made this movie a success. I pity their taste:)
Cheers!
