Let me wrap this one quickly. This movie has been directed by the same guy who made Page3 (which was an unexpected success) - Madhur Bhandarkar. He is on MTV giving interviews all day talking about "peopleS" when he means people. Well, coming to the point, this is an average movie which I am sure cannot fool people by pretending to be a good one. This should get thumbs down from the junta!
In short:This is a CD-movie (TM) as my friend Manish calls this kind of movies -- watchable only on a VCD or a DVD but not on big screen (where you do not have the option of fastforwarding).
Good things:
1.It is immensely entertaining in parts though predictible most of the times.
Rajat Kapoor and Raj Babbar have both acted very well and their characters are very well etched.
Performances are more or less powerful.
Bad Things(rest all falls in this category) :
1. Too many characters and most of them incosequential. Most of the characters are introduced in the plot with big promise (a case in the point: Minisha Lamba as the girl with spark) but end up being inconsequential.
Plot gets mindless at times. Sample this: Even if you have the access to a laptop and a pen drive handy, and the owner asleep, you would still need the password to transfer data. Won't you? Madhur probably doesn't know (and I am not ready accept that a top CEO doesnt have password for his account on laptop unless he is, of course, using Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. (For the dummies, these operating systems are not found on any recent laptops. These are legacy OS developed my M$ in 1992 ad 1995 respectively) I doubt if the CEOs of such big companies were given 10 years old laptop!
First half is so slow that at interval you will feel the movie has been runnig for close to three hours. Not only the music is pathetic but the background score is too loud for half the screen time and seriously wayward rest of the times. It doesn't create the mood at all.
Second half is hurried through and the movie may end at the same note that all of Madhur's movies end. I believe he might have based the whole movie on this one thought "while the entire row over pesticides has ended, the target of the corporate fight still continues suffering without reason". His earlier movie Chandani Bar was based on similar thought "whatever she does, a prostitute's family's life remains helll".
I watched this movie in a multiplex and I observed 3 groups (around 20 people) leaving the auditoriam in the second half of the movie while around 50 people left just before interval. This movie tested patience and I am proud I could sail through the two hours 45 minutes succesfully.
Direction is awful. The movie lacks continuity and the scenes are not glued properly. Editor does equally bad work. This problem isn't new. Page3 suffered from the same discontinuity but the concept was new and junta gave it thumbs up. Corporate's story has been told in different flavors in many earlier films.
Cinematography is just about good. It is not bad but there is nothing extraordinary.
Title is a misnomer:
The title of the movie Corporate is totally inept as it does not really talk about corporate in general. I know that corporate really doesn't look like this. Bottomline is important but then people don't sell their souls for it. There may be some corruption but it is not this bad. What is shown is probably the government's role in promoting corruption in Corporate world too. Corporates do run on ethics and values and this movie put the business in a bad light. This is a shallow movie. Avoid!
Acting Performances:
Kay Kay leads with Rajat Kapoor and Raj Babbar doing their bit honestly and brilliantly. Bipasha needs to work a bit on her expressions, especially the ones needed for histrionics. She doesn't look that natural. Harsh Chayya has been wasted. Rest of the actors have done well but then they have been wasted as well.
Word of caution:
There will be many people (who got bored watching this one) writing good reviews giving it 5 stars. Some of these people may truly have been impressed in one sense or the other by the movie but the rest are without doubt sadistic. Don't watch this movie in theatre. Save time and money. Wait for a couple of weeks till DVDs are out. Rent it, watch it with fingers firmly on fast-forward key, be your own editor and finish the movie off in around 2 hours. You will truly know what CD-movie(tm) really means!
