Now a days here in India the Petrol prices have touch skies about 80 inr / liter where as Diesel being cheaper at 58 inr / liter running cost of car seems to be a challenge! Current pricing as per on 30th Sep 2013.
Lets start with eg.
I own Tata Indigo GLS - Petrol / LPG cost 5.5 lacs inr on road.
Where as same Diesel varies could cost 6.35 lacs inr on road.
Thats initial cost difference of 85, 000 inr!
Well Petrol returns Mileage of 15 km / liter and diesel about 18 km / liter.
Lets calculate running cost.
Petrol 80 inr goes 15 km= 5.4 inr / km
Diesel 58 inr goes 18 km= 3.3 inr / km
i.e difference of 2 inr approx per KM so basically to recover initial cost would require 43, 000 km running.
An average general users would require about 3 year to make that run!
Lets consider maintenance till 43, 000 km run Petrol would cost about 10, 000 inr in maintenance where as same Diesel variant would cost around 15, 000 inr in maintenance i.e 5000 inr difference okay lets add up this too.
So you need to run about 45, 000 KM to recover initial cost difference+ maintenance cost considering interest rate as 12%.
Lets see interest of 90, 000 divided over 3 years

I.e about 17, 500 extra paid!
so again adding this to 90, 000 would become 1, 07, 500 inr~ 1, 08, 000
So you need to make 54, 000 KM running would take about 4.5 years!
Okay now lets go with AUTOGAS / LPG.
My Tata Indigo GLS does mileage of 10 km / liter of AUTOGAS where as AUTOGAS cost is 50 inr / liter
So running cost goes 5 inr / km! No great saving!
But wait here it comes, if you can have an
Cooking cylinder NON-subsidized comes for 1000 inr of 14 KG= 71.5 inr / kg
Commercial Cylinder NON-subsidized comes for 15, 00 inr for 19 KG= 79 inr / kg
Where as at Indian temperature conditions usually considering 30-32'C temperature 1 KG of LPG= 0.5 Liters!
So cooking gas comes about= 36 inr / liter >> running cost= 3.6 inr / km
where as commercial comes= 39.5 inr / liter >> running cost=~ 4 inr / km
Compared to Diesel which comes 3.3 inr / km
Lets take 4 inr / km for grant so here the time for recover would go as high as 6+ years!
On other hand LPG Kit comes for 18, 000 Lavato brand with RTO approval inclusive. Also LPG being provides almost same performance compared to Petrol though 10-15% less performance could be felt depending upon driving conditions. The maintenance cost with LPG again reduces about 20-25% compared to Petrol LPG / AUTOGAS is much clean fuel 30% less pollution compared to Petrol where as 65% less compared to Diesel! Full tank of LPG(about 28 KG) can run 550-580 KM.
So next time you plan for buying a car think twice.
