There are all sorts of brothers. Elder brothers and younger brothers. Short tempered brothers and cool brothers. Fussy brothers and lenient brothers. Serious brothers and humorous brothers. You name it! They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and packages and mentalities.
The breed of brothers I have is quite amusing. So in this category, I will try to cover how I did gift all my brothers(one real and the rest cousins), hoping that at least one of them matches the readers share of brothers.
First, my real brother- Atul. He is quite bigger than me(in age, that is.in size I beat him hands down.and belly forward). He is a bit fussy about neatness and stuff. So you can imagine how good I score with him. In fact, the only two things we share in common are love and our sun sign- Virgo. But I guess the ascendants goofed up. I mean, he is neat and tidy, and I can find my things only when they are not kept properly. He is well organized, and I can give Mr.Bean a major complex in the race of being unorganized. He is ecstatic when he gets something novel, something he can show off to people, like a telescope, a laptop, a gun, or anything out of the weird world. I hardly care for such things.just give me my music keyboard and see me forget wearing my shirt. He is a family oriented man, ready to fulfill his responsibilities, and I.well, I am a musician!
But still, the fact remains that we love each other dearly. And when we love each other dearly, gifts come into the picture. It is really easy to gift something to your real brother. I mean, you know so much about him that you don't really have to think much! You know what he likes, and what he doesn't have.and bingo! You got the perfect gift. I can gift many things to my brother. Like binoculars! Or a fancy cigarette lighter(I had given it to him from my first earning).
Then we turn to the cousins. Two of my favourite cousins are Parag and Prashant. These are two more weirdoes. Come to think of it, the weirdness does run in the family. Parag is 6 years younger to me, and Prashant is 8 years my junior, and so I am their big brother. Initially, it was pretty easy to gift them, as they lived in my native place. So anything from the city was oohlalaalaa for them. They could show it to all their friends, saying- It is from Bombay. But as they grew up, things started becoming difficult. They came to Bombay for college studies, and settled here, developed their own interests.
But luckily, I knew their likes and dislikes. I normally gifted them with some Jagjit Singh cassettes. Unfortunately for me, and for all Jagjit Singh fans, the gift occasions started outnumbering the great singer's music albums. Soon, they had all the songs of the maestro, and I had to think of other things to gift them. So I started planning my gifts on the stages of their life. When they were in college, I used to gift them belts, a good book, or the best a collegian can get, some green paper for the dates with the babes. As they graduated and joined the millions of working Mumbaikars, my choice of gifts changed again. I started giving them formal shirts, ties and wallets etc.
One more cousin brother I have is Raju. He is my age, and we have done some hilarious things together. We studied together.and failed together! So you can imagine the intensity of this relation. We shared our sorrows and heartbreaks together. So, I know him very well. Generally, the best gift you can give him is clothes and shoes. Yeah, he is one of those types who take eternity to get dressed, even if they are just going round the corner to call the raddiwala. But he is a man of high taste, like my brother Atul. So I have to be very choosy while buying a gift for him. The next best gift after clothes and shoes would be a bottle of the finest liquor. I feel that buying this is much more easier than the former items. Simply because you know what you are dealing with, and what's more, you can share the gift with him!
The list till now: Binoculars, cigarette lighters, music cassettes/CDs, belts, books, cash, formals, wallets, ties, clothes, shoes and of course, whisky.
IN CONCLUSION
So, what do you understand from all my ramblings above? To put it plainly, you should know your brother in and out, if you want to buy the perfect present for him. Every brother is an individual, and as I said before.they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and packages and mentalities.
