Being an Oscar winner, I felt that I had to watch this movie. It is an out-and-out musical in the sense that the entire story is told in the form of songs with good choreography. I am sure, a lot of effort must have been put in making this movie since songs are always difficult to film & this movie has songs by the dozen.
The story revolves around the persona of Roxie Hart played by Renee Zellwegerwho has a boring but faithful husband. She gets into extra-marital affairs & after a tiff with her lover, she shoots him point-blank when he decides to dump her.
She is arrested & sent to jail. Here she meets the matron, called Momma played by Queen Latifah excellently. Momma has a big heart provided someone greases her palms. Roxie gets a lawyer to fight her case. Richard Gere plays the lawyer & he looks smart in the role. He has a penchant for winning every case that he handles by focussing on the helplessness of his clients to the media & hogging the limelight in the process.
Catherine Zeta Jones is the other inmate of the jail who doesn't get along well with Roxie. The film has a lot of songs which are worth listening & beautifully filmed. It portrays life in its lines ''If you can't be famous, be infamous!''
Worth watching!
