This is a great diesel variant and excellent value-for-money. Though the looks are bit dated, the frontal change is appealing. A borrowed frontal looks of the SRV from GM's own stable is nicely adapted. The rear lamps should have also been modified the same way and should have complemented it. It lacks the instant refreshing look at first. Interiors are excellent & oozes quality. At this price, engine performance & space, this is giving Octavias & Civics run for their money. With rising price of Crude Oil, this is high time to switch to diesel which provides excellent low end torque and fuel efficiency and this car succeeds in both and at the right price. However for budget buyers in the three box category, it is still far fetched & they can still go for Honda Citys, SX4s, Aveos, Fiestas, DZires & fusions.
My test ride proved me right. Right through the gears the punch of the Turbo surprised me each time I pushed the pedal. The similar feeling emerged in Civic too, but was little on the higher revs. Magnum was effortless even at very low speeds. The addition of Auto climate control has allayed the many recurring complaints from many corners. Comparing with the Skoda(laura as a matter of fact) is needless. The laura is pegged at a diffrent league in terms of price and brand image competing with Accords & CRVs, Vitara, Camrys. If you have the money(almost double that of Optra Magnum's) go any day for Laura L & K AT variant. There where the day & night difference in the technology is apparent. A tech savvy individual will go ga-ga over the Skoda(VW under the skin). If you are really looking for long term bond with your Car(10 years plus) and/or if you have the money it is Laura L & K AT.
However, with new technologies, more upgradation & choices around it is difficult to justify the right car. Magnum is one such spec wnich is exciting & may gain the resale value. And what resale value you are talking about? Resale is going to be poorer each year with more model churning the second hand markets. The money you will save today and eventually as an owner is finally be the money you will have for later.
However, some high-end features(as in SX4) like audio controls on steering wheel are missing. Xenon lamps & AT could be the jewel on the crown(certainly with a bigger recess in your pocket)
