CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - Clash of the Super Heroes
It is the sequel to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER(2011) and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER(2014). In CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, set one year after the events of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON(2015), disagreement over international oversight of the Avengers fractures them into opposing factions, one led by Steve Rogers and another by Tony Stark. The film was also shot in south Korea and Bangladesh. Two sequels, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART 1(May 4, 2018) and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART 2(May 3, 2019), are also on the anvil. There are 16 main characters, 10 secondary characters and innumerable other characters. Audience is bound to get confused but then terrific action keeps them riveted and engrossed.
Hydra operatives send Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier(Sebastian Stan, 33) to find a car carrying serum and kill car occupants. Post Ultron's defeat by Avengers, Steve Rogers / Captain America(Chris Evans, 34), Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow(Scarlett Johansson, 31), Sam Wilson / Falcon(Anthony Mackie, 37), and Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch(Elizabeth Olsen, 27) stop Brock Rumlow / Crossbones(Frank Grillo, 50) from stealing a biological weapon. Rumlow commits suicide. U.S. Secretary of State Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross(William Hurt, 66) says the UN will have an international body to control the Avengers. While Tony Stark / Iron Man(Robert Downey, Jr., 51) supports this, Rogers has more faith in his own judgment.
A bomb kills King T'Chaka(John Kani, 72) of Wakanda. T'Chaka's son T'Challa / Black Panther(Chadwick Boseman, 39) vows to kill the bomber, presumably Barnes. Sharon Carter(Emily VanCamp, 29) tips Rogers off to Barnes' hideout in Bucharest. Rogers, Wilson, Barnes, and T'Challa are captured. Helmut Zemo(Daniel Brühl, 37) questions Barnes and then sends him on a rampage. Rogers stops Barnes. Zemo goes to Siberian Hydra facility. Rogers recruits Wanda, Clint Barton / Hawkeye(Jeremy Renner, 45), and Scott Lang / Ant-Man(Paul Rudd, 47) to help him hunt Zemo.
Stark assembles Romanoff, T'Challa, James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine(Don Cheadle, 51), Vision(Paul Bettany, 44), and Peter Parker / Spider-Man(Tom Holland, 19). Stark and his team intercept Rogers' team at Leipzig/Halle Airport, and fight. Rogers and Barnes escape. Rhodes is paralyzed. Romanoff tells Stark that Barnes was framed by Zemo. Stark follows Rogers and Barnes to the Siberian Hydra facility, with T'Challa. Winter Soldiers have been killed by Zemo, who is Sokovian and wants to punish the Avengers for his family's deaths.
It was Stark's parents whom Barnes killed in 1991. Stark blasts off Barnes' robotic arm. Rogers disables Stark's armour and departs with Barnes and leaves his shield, built by Stark's father, behind. T'Challa apprehends Zemo. Stark gives Rhodes braces to walk. Rogers with his comrades flee to Wakanda, where T'Challa grants them asylum. Barnes stays frozen. Parker is shown recuperating.
John Slattery(53) and Kerry Condon(33) reprise their roles as Howard Stark and F.R.I.D.A.Y. Martin Freeman(44) is introduced as Everett K. Ross, a member of the Joint Counter Terrorism Center. Alfre Woodard(63) appears as Miriam Sharpe, the mother of an American citizen killed in the battle of Sokovia. Marisa Tomei(51) appears as May Parker, Peter Parker's aunt. Hope Davis(52) appears as Maria Stark, Tony Stark's mother. Jim Rash(44) appears as a faculty member at MIT. Stan Lee(93) makes a cameo appearance as a FedEx delivery person. Co-director Joe Russo(45) cameos as the real doctor meant to diagnose Bucky.
Just like THE JUNGLE BOOK finished off FAN, this week CA:CW literally kills the three Hindi releases 1920 LONDON, ONE NIGHT STAND, and TRAFFIC. These movies shouldn't have released along with this biggie. Actually they shouldn't have been made in the first place. Wastage of time, money and energy.
With so many characters in the movie, at times the viewer may get confused. But a fan will follow it closely and enjoy. Some may go for the terrific action. And that is the highlight of the movie. There is the theme song and that just adds to the movie. The movie'll survive on the fad of super heroes. No doubt it'll mint money but it left me unsatisfied. It is more shadow than substance. Concentrating on the action, the soul of the movie - story telling has gone for a toss.
This summer, the heat is on. So, enjoy the movie in the cool climes of the theatre. After all the screen too is scorching with action, romance especially of the lead pair of Chris Evans and Emily VanCamp.
