So you are thinking of buying a new laptop? And you want the latest configuration available in it? Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, 15.6" display and that all. But before that think if you need that much.
Unless you are a gamer or a design professional, with huge need of power, you can get a good machine at a really affordable price. Core i3 processor from Intel would provide you ample power for web browsing, listening to songs, movies and school/college projects. 2 GB RAM would be good for that much multi-tasking but take 4 GB to be on the safe side. You can upgrade RAMs later, easily.
The latest available one is Core M. A low power processor giving you a better battery backup without compromising with general performance.
As far as storage is concerned, SSDs are faster as well as costlier than HDDs. I am currently using a laptop with 256 GB SSD. For documents, songs and few games this one is great as I keep my movies separately in external hard disk. Keeping large amount of data in a laptop always has the risk of getting accidental deletion.
Check the touchpad for quick and on-time responses, keys should be large enough and backlit one would be great during travel. Because you can't expect proper lighted surrounding everywhere.
Although you get good speakers nowadays but they are usually weak for outside uses. Don't expect a powerful pair You may need to buy extra, portable speakers.
Now the screen. You may get fascinated with 15.6" display but you should give preference to the lower ones. The 13" or 11" screens may make visibility difficult, so check those out before buying. They are very portable though. And a smaller screen gives better battery power too.
Coming to connectivity, you should have more USB 3.0 ports than 2.0(obviously for better transfer speeds). And yes, Memory card reader slots are needed frequently. Also if you don't need CD drives much, you can avoid those models. External CD/DVD drives are always available in market.
