What is the relationship between Rohit Shetty and logic? The simple answer to this question is - both are inversely proportional to each other. Most of his movies are prime example of it. But having said this, we all must agree to the truth that he has been hugely successful in giving hit after hit in the last few years. All his films, barring Singham & Zameen, were comedies and his latest presentation 'BOL BACHCHAN' is a comedy as well, which is inspired by Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt starrer GOLMAAL.
Looking at Rohit Shetty's success ratio at the box office, it can be said that he has read the pulse of the public well because none of his films were unsuccessful except SUNDAY. And with a winner subject of GOLMAAL in hand he was sure to hit the bull's eye yet again with 'BOL BACHCHAN'. But how far did he succeed with his latest film? Has he lived up to his reputation of giving hit after hit?
What is the film about:
It is the story of Abhishek Bachchan who has to leave his hometown Delhi & comes to Ranakpur with his sister Asin. He is a Muslim & to save the life of a boy break the lock of a temple, which was closed for years due to disputes between two villages. Krishna introduces him as Abhishek Bachchan instead of Abbas Ali sensing that when people will come to know that a Muslim has broken the lock of a temple, it may come down to communal riots.
Ajay Devgan who likes honesty and punishes anyone who tells lies or betrays him, gives Abhishek Bachchan a job. On the day of Eid he sees Abhishek Bachchan in a mosque and when asked what was he doing in a mosque, Abhishek lies that it was his twin brother Abbas Ali. Ajay Devgan agrees to give Abbas a job.
Thus begins the confusion of Abhishek Bachchan as he has to play both the characters, where as Neeraj Vora suspects him of being one man acting as two. How things get sorted out, is the film all about.
Analysis:
Since the film is inspired by one of the most successful comedy films made in India, comparisons are bound to be made and unfortunately that doesn't work well in the favour of 'BOL BACHCHAN' even though the director has tried his best to keep the viewers entertained throughout.
Like umpteen Hindi films, here too the script is a weak cog in the wheel as it fails to bring the character of Abhishek Bachchan to surface, considering the fact that he is supposed to be the main character in the film. What begins as the motive of Abhishek Bachchan was different & what ends was different.
Music of the film is just passable as the title song and Chalao Na Naina Se Baan Re are good to listen. Dialogues varies between funny to very funny hence you keep either smiling or laughing most of the time. Photography is top class.
Action scenes are of typical Rohit Shetty's trade mark type & are shot well. Chase scenes & blowing of vehicles on the streets are good to watch. Fight sequences are well captured even though it is difficult to digest two men can beat thirty odd hoodlums.
Performances:
Surprisingly Archana Puran Singh is not loud this time but still her performance is just average. Krishna doesn't disappoint Rohit Shetty's faith in him, who gave former the opportunity to work in this film as he performs well. Asrani does well.
Asin has few fixed expressions and she sticks to them. Prachi Desai's role is lengthier then Asin and she looks beautiful & does well. She has to be careful about her weight.
Abhishek Bachchan has all the reasons to blame the script that didn't allow his characters to blossom well. As Abhishek Bachchan he is good but as Abbas Ali, the dance instructor, he brings the house down. Watch out for the scene when Ajay Devgan asks Abbas to prove that he can dance. What follows is a nonstop laughter for five minutes. Had more concentration was given to the length of Abbas' role, the film would have been a laugh riot.
Ajay Devgan as a man who loves honesty is both tough with his principles and hilarious with his English. He is extremely likable.
Final Word:
Had Rohit Shetty preferred to develop the character of Abhiskhek Bachchan as Abbas Ali the dance instructor & has shown some confrontation with Ajay Devgan, things would have been different. As a director he has tried his best to ensure that all the ingredients required to make a balanced film to produce laughter are blended well, but it might not work in his favour this time, should people start comparing the film with Amol Palekar starrer GOLMAAL.
Comparisons apart, the film is still well made which in spite of loop holes does succeed in entertaining. Don't compare with the original if you want to enjoy the week end with a smile as there are enough funny scenes to tickle your ha-ha bone.
