Hey friends, if you are looking for a place to get away from the hectic and stressful city life to re-energise your mind, body and soul and, to reconnect with nature then, I believe Bhimtal is the perfect place for you to visit. It is a beautiful town located in the state of Uttarakhand and is 22km from Nainital. It is at an altitude of 1370 metres above sea level. The Bhimtal lake is the heart of the city and it gives the town its real beauty. The lake also has an island in the centre.
Bhimtal offers a lot for tourists to explore. It has pleasant summers and many tourists visit Bhimtal to get away from the scorching heat. It has also become a very popular destination for people in winters. It is packed with tourists who come to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve during the winter season. I personally have visited it both the seasons and my experience are always great.
There are a plenty of things that you can do in Bhimtal. I would suggest you go for a morning walk around the lake preferably from Tallital end to daanth as it has nearly no traffic. The fresh breeze, the sound of water in the lake, voices of birds chirping, ducks lined up and swimming in the lake and trees dancing in the air is a treat for the mind, body and soul. It will benefit your health as well.
You can visit the Bhimeshwara Mahadev temple, which is situated at the bank of Bhimtal lake. It is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be built by Bhima. It was later rebuilt by the Raja of Kumaon.
Kainchuli Devi temple is also built on the bank of the lake. The actual temple is said to have been drowned under water but, the people have built a bigger temple at the bank of the lake. It is believed by the locals that the water near this temple heals all skin problems.
The Island aquarium is situated at the centre of the Bhimtal lake. Initially the island had a restaurant which was later converted to an aquarium to avoid polluting of the lake. You can reach the aquarium with a row boat, you get to enjoy the boating in the lake as well There is also a butterfly research centre in Bhimtal which has a very large collection of butterfly and moth reference collection. It is situated near the bhimtaal lake.
The Nal Damyanti tal is a small natural lake situated about 2km from Bhimtal and, is a sacred place for the local residents. Sattal situated about 5Km from Bhimtal is a place of attraction for nature lovers. Boating in this lake surrounded by forest covered mountains is an amazing experience.
Naukichiatal the lake of nine corners is situated 4km from Bhimtal. It is a beautiful place and this lake is the deepest lake of the Nainital on with a depth of 40.3mtrs The Karkotaka temple is a famous Naag(Snake) temple situated at the top pf the Karkotaka hill.
If you are an adventure lover you also have a lot to do here. You can go for trekking, paragliding, kayaking or biking, you will have a great experience.
For accommodation there are hotels available in all price ranges varying from small budget guest houses to big resorts. There are some hotels near the lake as well. There are a lot of local food joints and some new cafes have also opened now.
Bhimtal is well connected by road and is in the route connecting rest of the hilly kumaon region to the plains. It is at 315km from Delhi that is nearly a 7-hour drive. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam which is at 20Km from Bhimtal. If you are travelling by train you can easily get a taxi from Kathgodam railway station to Bhimtal. The nearest airport is Pantnagar at about 54km from Bhimtal.
Bhimtal is a safe place to visit the local people are welcoming and helpful.
