Bawarchi Family Restaurant is an abode of tandoori delights in the heart of South Kolkata. This is a true pocket friendly restaurant, serving quality food and living up to the expectations of its patrons.
I have been a frequenter of this joint since my college days, and it has some nice memories attached to it. I still remember that I took my childhood friend for a Biriyani treat in Bawarchi after my first film review was published in a leading daily newspaper. Later on, we have gone there in groups of friends and enjoyed their food and ambiance. I have also been there with my family.
Bawarchi is located near the 8B Bus Stand, in Jadavpur, Kolkata, in close vicinity to the campus of Jadavpur University. Due to it's great location it enjoys frequent footfall from university students, professors and tandoori lovers in the city. It is located in the far corner of the first floor in Jadavpur Market, opposite the 8B Bus Stand.
The ambience and decor is pleasant. Nothing too lavish, nothing too simple. Nice wall papers and mirrors adorn the walls. The wooden tables, sofas and chair offer comfortable sitting and eating.
Let's come to the food now. Bawarchi is famous for it's non-veg Biriyanis, both Chicken and Mutton Biriyani. The quantity served is good for two, the handi in which they serve is decorative. The most interesting part is that a candle keeps burning under the container to keep your Biriyani warm. The Biriyanis have creative names, such as Mughal-E-Azam Biriyani or Azaadi Biriyani.
Other delicacies include the Tandoor dishes, especially Tandoori Chicken and Tandoori Kababs. Go for the Afghani Fish Kabab, Tangri Kabab or Tandoori Prawn. Their Rolls are famous too, specially Chicken or Mutton Kathi Rolls. If you want to keep it light, go for soups - Tom Yum Soup and Sweet Corn Soup are recommended.
Vegetarians can find solace in Butter Naan and Dal Makhani, Lahori Kadai Paneer and Kashmiri Pulao. You can finish with a green salad and Pineapple Raita.
Recent additions include Chello Kabab, and indianised Chinese dishes. If you have sweet tooth go for the ice creams. Duck and Lamb dishes are also available, but I have not tried them yet.
The service is prompt and courteous. The food prices are reasonable and pocket friendly.
You will never regret coming back to this place if you are a true blue Tandoori lover.
Happy munching!
