After using Norton Antivirus , Macfee and for years together , but recently I moved to AVAST 4.6 Anti virus , In the very first instance I feel that this Antivrus is quite powerful. Summary Avast …is a really good anti virus. The updates are really small. You can change the skins Does not consume much system memory Provides really good Real Time Scan. Good Points Very fast and slick. The antivirus is continually on, but you hardly notice the difference in the PC speed like you do for Norton antivirus. The real power of an antivirus is seen in its heuristics. The heuristic system of Avast is the best in the business - far better than Norton or Mcafee. Automatic daily updates. There is no doubt this antivirus is right up there with Norton and Mcaffe, But what makes it all the more appealing is that it is free of cost for home users. Hats off to its developers and Management. Bad Points Does not have any integrated firewall. But if you have a good firewall like Zone Alarm it is excellent. Avast home edition antivirus with Zone alarm is a formidable combination. Avast home edition takes more time to scan vob, mpg, mp3, avi files than Norton or Mcafee. Other files take the same time like Norton antivirus. But since it is free and extremely good it is okay. I do not know about the professional edition. If your machine is infected before you download Avast backup all your data, unlike Norton ..Avast does not care what's infected it will delete it. So if your programs are infected or Windows files are infected it will delete in boot scan General Comments I was using Norton antivirus 2004 around 1.5 years back. Then I switched to Avast. I have been using Avast for more than 1 year now and there has been no problem. During the last 4 months I got my broadband internet connection and I did not change my antivirus. As a double measure I installed Zone Alarm Pro firewall. There has been no problem with anything at all. But last week I did the mistake of uninstalling Avast and installing Norton Antivirus 2006 which I got from a friend. And all hell broke loose after than. Firstly Norton was slowing down the system so much that if you try to open word when Norton is scanning it would take 3-4 mins inspite of my 256 MB Ram, 1.7 GHz processor, 8 GB Disk Free space, Win2k OS System. Even when Norton is running only in background, the system was extremely slow something that never happened with Avast antivirus. And Avast could detect many Trojans and spy ware that Norton failed to detect due to its heuristic system. (And Norton also detected a few Trojans which Avast failed to detect. But when I scanned these same files using eTrust Antivirus which is there in my company, it failed to detect these as viruses). Also whenever Norton detected any virus it would show the same message in a circle. That virus message 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, ....then 10, then some gap, then again to 1 and so on. This continued until I got fed up of that antivirus and uninstalled it the same day.. I reinstalled Avast again and it has continued till that day on my system. I feel between Norton and Avast, Avast is better. On top of that Avast is free. That clinches it. A few tips Back up all your stuff before using Avast, the only real antivirus program. It's better than all others, it will delete when you tell it to, forget about quarantine like Norton, who cares about it. You get a virus just delete it, infected web pages, it tells you to close, and whatever slipped though while the page is being loaded just delete, it's simple
