I visited Auroville only one in 2009 I guess, just about 5 months before my father passed away. I Remember place this a lot because this was the place which was visited by all four of us, that includes my dad one last time. So here is about this place -
What is Auroville -
It is actually an Experimental Township located just North of outskirts of Pondicherry.
A Great architectural place I guess. Built just of yoga lovers, Greenery lovers and relaxation. I was very much Amazed by the golden metallic sphere in the center of this town. Many tourist around the world visit this township just to see this sphere and the achievements behind it.
This place was originally known as "Sri Aurobindo Society".
Location -
Auoville is situation just about few Kms north of Pondichery. When I visited this place in 2009, the township was actually almost at the end of the construction stage. So, there were no Sufficient Sign boards to Reach this place. But now, since this is an important Landmark in South India, lots of Signboards would have been set up I suppose. I am not sure about this because I never visited this place after 2009.
From Adyar, Chennai, it would take roughly about 3 hrs to reach this place. You need to Travel on ECR to reach this place.
Bike and tourist Transport is Available to Reach this Place from Pondi City.
Amenities -(I am not sure if any of these a still there or Change)
1) Yoga Arena - A large Arena where Yoga is performed. I am sure it happens all the day. But it sure happens in the morning. I have seen a lots of Foreign tourists going to this place on bikes in the morning.
2) Traditional Shopping - A big shop which sells many Traditional Items, Statues, ornaments and other gift items.
3) A Mini Aurobindo Theater - A mini Theater were Digital screenings about the Ancient fact about the Township and motivational video are played. This also includes Lectures of many Mahans and Rishis.
4) Cafeteria - Food Place. Only Veg I guess. Not sure because we only purchased water from here.
And A lot more would have come up as of now. It is said that currently Aurobindo/Auroville is a small Town with Factories, shopping centres and much more have been erected.
This Place is best for -
yoga and meditation - There are a lots of Arena built in the complex for performing Yogasanas. I heard that even the yogas are more powerful when done inside the Golden Sphere.
Photography - The Township gives the Forrestal feel. Hence a nice place of nature Photography. Sadly I did not had cameras those days to Enjoy photography.
Best place for Green vegetation - People who like Nature and calm Environment, should visit here Must.
Best time to Visit -
This place can be visited all the days of a year because the nature gives the cool environment here all the time. Bur its advisable to visit here in winter.
Other Basic Amenities -
1) Parking - Yes this place has enough parking for Car, bikes and even big vehicles.
2) Rest Rooms - The Rest rooms are maintained very clean in there. there are enough Rest rooms in there.
Inconvenience Felt -
The only negative view I felt was, the golden metallic sphere was located almost 1.5 kms inside from the main road(Auroville Visitor's Center). When I visited here back in 2008 there was No Vehicle facility upto the sphere. And we had to walk through the muddy way. My mom who has prolonged foot pain problem had a tough time deal this visit.
Aged people will find difficult to walk.
But I guess, as of now, The complex has Transportation services like Electric Car and bicycle.
Verdict -
If you are a Yoga and Nature Lover, this place is must place visit. In Other words its like visiting heaven in Pondicherry.
