WE ARE MOVING. SEE YOU IN 3 WEEKS!
Area 7 was written by Matthew Reilly and published by Publishers Weekly. It was published in 2001.
I bought this pocket book at a used book store because I had enjoyed reading his "Ice Station".
I paid$5.00 CAD for it. The ISBN# 0-312-983322-0
Marine Captain Shane Schofield returns as the books hero. The survivors of the Ice Station are also in the book.
Fox, Mother and Scarecrow are the duty on Marine One, the President's helicopter.
The Plot:
Could the United States of America actually be destroyed?
The book begins in 2010. It takes place in the western part and eastern part of the USA. In the desert, in the air and under the water.
Area 7 begins with a prisoner, (who had been sentenced to death for treason), was at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary being granted his last request before being taken to Illinois for execution.
His request was to SEE the the inauguration of the new President, Charles Samson Russell.
The President is on a plane flying to Washington DC. Twelve minutes later, in the back of an Air Force Ambulance, Russell is revived, the hyper oxygenated blood in his veins keeping him alive despite his heart having stopped.
Six months later group of rogue air force officers plan a coup d' etat when the President visits a top secret base in Utah where an antidote is being developed against a sino-virus developed by the Chinese.
A group of South Africans have been recruited to work on the project.
Their motive is to retake Africa and restore white power.
My Thoughts:
Matt Reilly takes all of the internet conspiracy theories and rolls them into the background of his book. He puts in things that you never saw coming.
My problem with this writing is that I like action scenes and hero characters to seem to be realistic or at least close to being believable.
The battles and confrontations felt exciting.
Area 7 seemed to me to move into more science fiction as opposed to being a straight ahead thriller.
My Recommendation:
Area 7 wasn't Reilly's best book but it was enjoyable enough for me to give it a 4 star rating.
Thank you for reading my review.
