Ok! They've broken up. Axl has filled the gap's with Buckethead, left overs from other bands and cameos by other artists like Dave Navarro (Oh My God!, End of Days). But their music is still as alive as the band. Each CD circling one by one in my car. But, Appetite for Destruction - thats special. My gateway to rockin' with GN'R
Welcome to the Jungle! Thats what this band announced with their first official release, aptly titled, ''Appetite for Destruction''. Though technically, not their first album (Live! Like a Suicide - LP was first, it was later released as GNR Lies), it still was a dream debut album for any band.
This album was the largest selling debut album for any rock act. It outsold the Bon Jovi's, Poisons and other glam rock bands that came in the 80's (I think the guy who wrote an earlier review needs to verify his facts - this album alone sold more copies than any Bon Jovi album). What it brought with it was raw energy and attitude! They also won a bunch of MTV VMA's - Best New Artist (88), Best heavy metal video - sweet child (89) to name a few.
W. Axl Rose - lead singer. His was the perfect voice for such a high pitched band. He had the bad guy attitude to fit the bill of a punk metal band frontman. What I liked was his experimentation with his voice. If you listen to GNR songs carefully, you will figure out that most are re-recorded with Axl singing in 2 or 3 different pitches.
Slash was the perfect ''dark'', mysterious, figure needed for a band. Every metal band had their's like Jimmy Page (Led Zepp), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) and the likes. His guitar rifts were simply amazing. The intro to ''Sweet child'' simply stands out, AWESOME!
Duff McKagan (Bass guitar), Izzy Stradlin (Rhythm guitars) and Steven Adler (on drums) completed the fab five.
Talking about the songs, besides Jungle and Sweet Child, the one's that left an impression were Mr Brownstone, Nightrain, Rocket Queen and ofcourse, Paradise City, my favorite on the disc. Worth listening again and again and again.
So, time to pick up that CD and relive those wild 80's!
