I have often wondered why I like Anand Sehgal, the hero of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's film 'Anand'.The answer seems to be that I have seen this chap. Not as one complete package. But I have seen a bit of Anand in Mr X,and a little bit in Ms Y.And so on.Anand is the personification of all that is good about an average indian male.Played by Rajesh Khanna,he is innocent looking and has a lovable smile. Then,he can spontaneously make you his friend within 15 seconds or less.He is an instinctive matchmaker,a very persuasive one at that. And he has a terrific sense of humour. One that can be subtle or very in-the-face.Yet Anand is not a comic. He is a philosopher,a dealer in the vagaries of life.He is afraid of dying like everyone else.Yet he romanticizes life and compares approaching death to poetry.Anand is the story of gradual decay and our complete helplessness when faced with it.We are all going to die one day. This classic film keeps that in mind and does two things. It shows that resist it or not,the end will come and take away all.It also shows that the memories you leave behind can defeat the sense of loss that death stands for.Watch 'Anand' for a complete understanding of life and to grow the awareness that death is inevitable.I apologise if I am rude.
