I am writing this review after reading a review recommending AMEX card. My opinion differs.
6 years ago, I got an AMEX international card (unlimited credit). I was impressed. I subscribed for this card because of the good marketing skills of the representative of AMEX. But the job of the rep ended there. After verbally assuring me of good service, his job was only to find new customers.
I went to UK with the card and 75% places do not accept AMEX. They need only VISA or Mastercard. So, I had to depend mostly on my cash reserves. I could not avail benefits of holding a credit card. I could only wish if I had a VISA or Mastercard.
Then once, in my trip to USA I went to a gas station to put petrol in my car. I used my AMEX card and the card was declined and there were instructions to detain my card. The operator politely told me this and took my card away. I was deeply embarrased and insulted. I called my India office and told this problem. My office followed up the matter and it was found that it was a mistake on the part of AMEX. The next day AMEX apologised and instructed the gas station vendor to return my card.
As soon as I reached India, I got my card cancelled. The AMEX people repeatedly apologised to me and even offered to waive the annual fees. But I had decided never to turn to AMEX card again
