I happened to visit the Acres Club in Chembur of which I am a member on one Sunday evening and the wife and kids decided that they were hungry. Closest was this new restaurant opened within the premises of the Club, named Alspice. When I was told that the restaurant had opened just a month ago, I was a little worried about the food and the service. I was however pleasantly surprised to learn that non-members of the club and in fact anyone off the street can dine here.
Although within the premises of the club, it does have a separate entrance and is an open restaurant! My first impression was good as the overall ambience and decor was nice and soothing and thank god the lighting was such that I was fairly sure I would be able to see what I was eating. This low lighting is something that puzzles and infuriates me at some of the best places in town but Alspice was well-lit indeed.
The menu was somewhat eclectic but a welcome deviation from the mundane. The order was taken promptly although no one peered over our shoulders or hounded us. A few helpful suggestions based on the chef's core competence were given and I took them in the spirit in which they were dispensed. The food arrived quite quickly, the first dishes- starters- within 7-10 minutes, and were quite simply scrumptious.
They were presented well and in generous helpings. My kids went completely wild over the chicken lollipops and the kebabs and soon I was fighting with them for the last pieces too. The main course was great too( wont divulge the details here) and although the maitre'd tried to convince us to have a dessert we were stuffed to the gills and left as a happy family. I heartily recommend Alspice and I hope they will keep up the high standard they seem to have set. Time will tell.
