Courtroom Drama!. Review on Aitraaz

Here I am, back again to torture all of you with my ridiculous reviews! These past days have been quite strenuous, and I was sick, and I am getting over 10 homeworks a day, so I couldn’t find time

to write. I’m writing this review, and then I have to begin my homework, so replies to comments will be quite late!

Basically, Aitraaz begins with a lot of stupid comedy. The comedy is sickening, with that fairy (That’s what she is in a TV show) going to the wrong house and Priya (Kareena) to the fairy’s assigned place. So Priya thinks Raj is a lawyer and becomes his secretary, and the Kaali Fairy becomes the housemaid of Annu Kapoor, who was looking for a secretary. This small plotline takes upto half an hour of the entire movie. After the confusion, Raj (Akshay) and Priya get married. After this follows a song. By this time I wanted to go to sleep, but sadly, it was day.

Then comes the announcement, involving new members in the family. Raj gets promoted to The Board of Directors because the company’s owner’s (the late Amrish Puri) new wife, Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) wants it. We are taken back into a flashback, which you cannot even tell when it begins, which shows Sonia to be Raj’s ex-girlfriend. There are some scenes which seemed not G. Then it shows Sonia putting on a glum face and saying, sadly, that she is pregnant, as if there is no fault of her own. She leaves Raj because she wants to be a career woman and having a baby will simply ruin her figure, leave stretch marks, or some other frivolous excuse like that. And now, back to the present.

One night, when Sonia is feeling quite ...um... sex-starved, she invites Raj to her house and tries to seduce him. And he complies, but a sudden flash of his wife and he gets up and away from Sonia, who flares her nostrils and complains to her darling husband about Raj. And Raj is put in jail, has a case filed against him. A smug Sonia flutters her eyelashes at him. The good wife, Kareena, laps up law book after law book and fights her husband’s case. Surprisingly, the husband never tells her that he was about to comply with Sonia’s wishes. After all, he’s gotten a way out, and why should he spoil it? After this, courtroom drama takes over.

Raj (Akshay Kumar): I thought that Akshay didn’t do exceptionally well in his performance, but then, he did perform well. His acting was natural, though he did tend to sometimes get hyper and then sometimes stone-faced, but still...

Priya (Kareena Kapoor): Kareena’s acting was quite natural, and you can’t really compare it to that of Rani Mukerji in Veer-Zaara. I personally felt that there should have been more insight into her feelings. She just turned into a lawyer in the second half.

Sonia (Priyanka Chopra): It was good. Yes, I think it was. She managed not to overact, flare her nostrils too much, squint or make veins of her neck stand out in her negative role.

Amrish Puri was good in his role, though I felt that he just disappeared into nothingness at the end of the movie. It would have been good to see his reaction. Annu Kapoor was good, certainly, but maybe he shouldn’t take too many movies as it would interfere with his Silver Anniversary with Antakshiri (or something like that). Paresh Rawal disappointed, I have seen him in better days (Hera Pheri, for instance).

The movie seems less like a movie in the second half and more like a lawyer show. I somehow liked it, and didn’t like it at the same time. It was OK, I guess then. The songs were good, but they seemed to be just pointless as well as lyric-less. I mean, Tala Tum and Gela Gela? Tell me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recognise these words from any language. So overall, Aitraaz was an average movie!
