Go ahead..!! Express Yourself.. Review on AirTel 'Express Yourself ' commercial

The other day I was making my son study his lesson in Environment. The lesson being “Communication”, I started the importance of communication in life and its importance. I would like to share some of our conversations here below :

Me : Abhi, what does your teacher say about communication ?

Abhi : Mamma, she says we can communicate through speaking, actions, expressions etc. with each other.

Me : Yes beta, Communication is very important. It has different forms which are talking to each other, through actions, writing a letter etc. It can be related to anything which makes you tell your feelings to the other person.Did you understand ?

Abhi : Yes mamma, Anu (My 1 and a half year old daughter) does it by crying no ?

Me : Yes, She is too small to speak up so she cries to draw my attention to her and points her finger (i.e. actions) to whatever she wants.

After the lesson on importance of communication and other sources of communications over, I asked him what was his favourite ad on TV ? Expecting a not so intelligent reply from my 8 year old, who is always into cartoon network, I was amazed when he said it’s the Airtel “Express Yourself” Commercial. From here learning from him how he liked it has been an experience in itself that any mother can be proud of. Surprisingly all the captions of the Back & White frames were on his lips. Here’s what he had to say :

Say Yes : It’s a wedding and the bride is desperately waiting for the groom to “Say Yes”. She has tears in her eyes and is trying to tell this through her eyes. Mamma she does it through actions. (I was overwhelmed.)

Say No : Mamma seeing this scene, I remember the curfew that was imposed in our city sometime ago, Wasn’t it due to same reasons shown in the scene ? I think what I understood was that we should say NO to violence. Right Mamma !! (I could not believe this.)

Say Something : Now this is something which I see once in a while. Don’t they resemble you and Pappa sometimes ? Atleast one of you should say something to break the silence..(Yes you naughty !!)

Say Nothing : This is for those who want to talk to people who have left us to stay with God.. How could you communicate this to them ? Say nothing (Yes my darling !)

Inspire : I love this scene as my favourite Sachin is shown here. This scene makes me want to become like Sachin..? (Yes dear..you are already my Sachin )

Conspire : I could not understand this scene but I would tell you whatever I could take out from it was three girls murmuring within themselves ? Are they planning something bad ? or good ? (You are almost there son !)

Confess : Mamma this what I do to you whenever I do anything wrong be it harassing Anu, playing pranks or those hot beatings from teacher or those regular goof ups in my Maths problems. (Got it right son !)

Celebrate : I jump with joy when India wins a match. I would want India to beat Australia desperately this time. I m going to celebrate it by jumping which I expert it (Yes my monkey chap !)

Negotiate : I love football also. Two men talking strongly to the umpire (he meant it by referee) trying to convince him with their point. (You are almost there !!)

Speak up : Mamma this is called communications through actions without actually talking isn’t it ? That boy cannot speak and he is doing it with his hands. ( Yes ! my little scholar)

Speak Out : Mamma the scene is very beautiful. The light of the candles in the darkness spreads light and try to cover the darkness. Again actions speak out !! ( Yes dear !!)

Be Heard : This I do the first after I take my bath in the morning.. Talking to God. I pray for everybody at home. I want the god to hear me. Will I be heard ? (Yes dear, you will definitely be heard )

So this is what I got to learn from my little scholar about this mesmerizing ad. So the last caption says Airtel “Express Yourself” will be from my perspective. The Black and White visual frames that flash on your Television set grips you and transforms us to its world. Here the expressions are completed with small words which communicates volumes of its expressions. This ad has definitely struck a chord with the masses and its success can be attributed to the agency that made it possible.

I don’t know whether Airtel has been able to increase sales or no but it has certainly made his brand presence felt.
